SEN Support – Every Child Deserves to Learn

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, participate, and succeed.

Through the OECS PEARL Special Education Needs (SEN) initiative, schools across the region are strengthening support systems to better serve children with disabilities and learning differences, ensuring they receive the understanding, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive.

Inclusion begins with awareness, compassion, and collaboration. Together, we can ensure that no child is left behind and that every learner is given a fair chance to reach their full potential.

“Investing in our teachers is investing in our future.”

Hear directly from Grenada’s Chief Education Officer, Dr. Dianne Abel-Jeffrey, as she strongly endorses MyPD, the teacher professional development platform implemented under the OECS PEARL Programme.

As the OECS PEARL project phase prepares to conclude on 30 June 2026, Grenada reaffirms its commitment to institutional ownership and sustainability. The focus now shifts from implementation to ensuring that the gains made through MyPD are fully embedded, resourced, and sustained for continued teacher empowerment across the region.

Dominica joins its OECS partners in recognising the value of strengthening teacher capacity as a cornerstone of improved student outcomes and long-term education transformation.

Let us continue to turn project milestones into lasting policy and practice. Join the transition toward a stronger, more sustainable education system.

Reading Tip for Parents & Guardians

Reading together every day is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to support your child’s learning journey. Just 10 minutes of shared reading can strengthen vocabulary, build confidence, improve fluency, and create meaningful bonding moments.

Whether it’s a favourite bedtime story or a book filled with Caribbean adventures, making reading enjoyable helps children develop a lifelong love for learning.

Introducing “The Academic Check-Up”

Between 18 and 29 May, students across the region participated in national diagnostic tests integrating the OECS Early Reading Assessment (OERA) and Early Mathematics Assessment (OEMA) frameworks.

An accompanying OECS PEARL regional survey has revealed important insights, including concerns and anxiety expressed by some students, parents, and teachers around diagnostic testing. These findings highlight the need for continued awareness and a positive shift in how we understand and approach assessment.

In response, we are pleased to introduce **“The Academic Check-Up”**—an initiative aimed at reframing diagnostic assessments as a normal and supportive part of the learning journey, just like a routine health check-up.

This approach encourages a healthier, more positive understanding of assessment, helping students, parents, and educators see it as a tool for growth, early support, and improved learning outcomes.

Join us in embracing this transition toward a more supportive and informed approach to education assessment across the OECS.

"The OECS PEARL is one of the most impactful projects to emerge from the OECS."

Hear directly from our sister island of Saint Lucia as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Kendall Khodra, shares his perspective on the transformative impact and success of the OECS PEARL Programme.

His reflections underscore the significant strides made across the region in strengthening education systems, supporting teachers, modernizing curricula, and improving learning outcomes for students.

As we approach the end of the official project phase this month, Dominica remains committed to preserving and building upon the gains achieved through the OECS PEARL Programme. This is not the end; it is the beginning of a new chapter of regional collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement in education.

Together, we can ensure that the investments made today continue to benefit future generations of learners throughout the OECS.

How will you help carry the torch forward? Join the transition and be part of shaping the future of education in the OECS.
