On Friday, March 13th, 2026, the Portsmouth Secondary School celebrated Literacy Day alongside a special collaboration with the Mathematics Department for Pi Day. Under the empowering theme "Literacy: The Ultimate Flex," students were reminded that the ability to read, write, and communicate effectively is the most versatile tool in their skill set. Simultaneously, the Mathematics Department infused the day with a sense of purpose and resilience through their theme, "Mathematics and Hope," bridging the gap between numbers and the human experience.
The morning assembly served as the centerpiece for these celebrations, featuring a dynamic fusion of literacy and numeracy activities. The English Department introduced a thrilling "Narrative Challenge," which tasked students with spontaneous storytelling based on random prompts, showcasing our students' impressive ability to think on their feet. In a poignant tribute to our cultural heritage, the school recognized the enduring legacies of local literary icons such as Phyllis Allfrey and Jules Pascal. The department further energized the crowd with a stirring Choral Speech performance and the debut of a dedicated Literacy Anthem.
The Mathematics Department brought their own rhythmic flair to the stage, proving that math is far more than just calculations. Their presentation featured a creative "Pi Poem" and the high-energy "1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8" chant, which had the entire student body engaged in the rhythm of numbers. The collaboration between these two departments highlighted the harmony between different fields of study, proving that whether through a stanza or a sum, our students have the "flex" to excel. All in all, the day was a resounding success.
