Eriksholm Research Centre is part of Oticon, a world-leader in hearing care. We are committed to making audiological discoveries with the potential to significantly enhance end-user benefits in future hearing care. This is realised through close collaborations with the world leading academic research institutitions. By bringing experts together, we are able to create mutually-beneficial research s

ynergies and open up new lines of inquiry in the broader research community. By engaging in continuous dialogue with a large number of people living with hearing loss and the care professionals dedicated to helping them, we are able to maintain a deep understanding of the real-life implications of hearing loss, and gauge the impact of our ideas with real people in their everyday lives. The result is a multi-disciplinary staff able to identify and demonstrate new opportunities within audiology, signal processing and behavioural science. This lays the foundation for Oticon to further develop audiological concepts and apply them in hearing solutions that empower people with hearing loss to communicate freely, interact naturally and participate actively. As active members of the international scientific community, our results are published regularly.

💡One of the most important skills for a scientist? The ability to explain why their work matters to different audiences.

In a world where research often involves collaboration across disciplines and sectors, communicating complex ideas clearly is essential to ensure that insights can be understood, applied, and ultimately create impact!

Last week, we wrapped up the bi-annual , bringing together young researchers from Demant and university partners across the globe under the theme “Communicating Science”.

🤺Over several days, participants challenged their own communication skills through poster presentations, elevator pitches, and interactive workshops, while learning from experts in science dissemination, evidence generation, intellectual property, branding, and industry engagement.

Most importantly, they connected with peers from diverse disciplines, building a new, international research community 🌱

🙌A big thank you to all participants, speakers, and organizers who contributed to making this year's Eriksholm Summer School a success!

Engineering student challenge leads to new insights into human connection!

What does it mean to be socially connected in the real world? A recent study suggests that heart-rate synchrony may provide an important part of the answer.

By analyzing sound data collected through Demant's challenge, researchers from DTU and Eriksholm Research Centre found that people's heart rates synchronize when they are socially engaged, particularly when they are physically close, familiar with one another, and sharing experiences ❤️❤️

The study also revealed that the sound environment matters: synchrony was stronger in favorable listening conditions and gone in excessively noisy conditions!

Earlier this August, Eriksholm Scientist Josefine Munch Sørensen led a new group of Audio Explorers, as they collected data in Toronto, Canada.

We look forward to seeing what future discoveries these data may reveal!

How can we tell when someone is truly engaged in a conversation?
Listening effort is about more than acoustics. It is also shaped by motivation, attention, and our willingness to invest mental energy in understanding and connecting with others.

Yet we still lack objective ways of measuring when people begin to disengage in a conversation⛓️‍💥

PhD student Kathrine Lowes explores INTERPERSONAL SYNCHRONY, the tendency for people to align their speech, movements, heart rate, breathing, and even brain activity when they interact 👥🔄
This synchrony may provide a window into how engaged we are with one another.

Kathrine's research investigates whether these shared physiological patterns can serve as objective markers of listening engagement, particularly in challenging communication situations.

The ultimate goal is to move beyond controlled laboratory tasks and develop measures that capture what happens in real conversations, where people continuously adapt to each other and where communication can gradually shift from effortless connection to struggle.

Could synchrony help us understand not just whether people are hearing, but whether they are truly connected?

What makes listening worthwhile - even when it takes effort?
👋Meet Danaé Krikorian , PhD student at Eriksholm Research Centre.
With a background in psychology and data science, Danaé is developing tools that use wearable sensors and smartphone-based questionnaires to measure listening effort in real-life situations.

👩‍💻🔎By combining physiological measurements with people's own experiences, her research aims to better understand how listening affects stress, fatigue, and engagement throughout the day.

🌍Danaé is part of the -funded EASYLI doctoral network, and her work helps bring hearing research out of the lab and into the environments where people live and work - ultimately supporting the development of better hearing technologies and more personalized hearing care 🦻

Everyday communication is dynamic and multisensory, shaped by shifting attention, overlapping speech, and visual cues 🗣️👀

A recent study from Eriksholm Research Centre, Oticon, Lund University, and Linköpings universitet uses wearable EEG to study how the brain tracks speech during sustained attention, switching, and natural conversation.

The results show that wearable EEG can reliably track selective attention in complex, multisensory listening scenarios - and help guide the design of more realistic future experiments and applications 🙌

Scientist Peter Asbjørn Leer Bysted explores how hearing aids can move beyond static models to become truly adaptive.
