As trees, flowers and bushes draw up nourishment from the soil, as the sun comes out to bless the myriad life forms, as the days brighten and lengthen, we enter a time of possibility for replenishing our being. While the human madness and darkness is getting increasingly shrill and painful, we can choose to devote our attention to the heart of the matter, to growing those parts of ourselves and our relations which rhyme with the rhythms of life. It is not optional, an indulgent or trivial hobby, to give our time and energy to activities that strengthen and deepen the living world – it might well be the only thing that keeps us sane and healthy as we live through the crises that define our age.

And so we send out this newsletter with best wishes for a happy spring time! We write to you with wishes of strength and vitality and news of the upcoming Conference on the Rights of Nature and the Future of Democracy in the Nordic Region (https://natureanddemocracy.org) and this years Nature's Constitutional Assembly this June. We send out a prayer for a collective moment of puhpowee this spring: that the mycelium that connects us beneath may send us the signals and nutrition we all need to move beyond our grasp and emerge connected, whole and changed.

𝗣𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗹 is a reservoir of knowledge in this field and a compassionate voice for the living world. We are excited that she has agreed to be key note speaker at the conference. She agreed to record a conversation about the cultural and legal shift that is taking place to include nature in our thinking about and practice of democracy as a sort of primer for the gathering. Listen in and join the conference on the 4th-7th of June: https://natureanddemocracy.org.

By bringing together actors from across the Nordic region, the conference aims to inspire a new democratic culture in which nature is no longer seen merely as a resource but as co-creator in the development society. We call this gathering in the spirit of co-creation, of kinship and of reciprocity. This gathering is not as much a conference as it is a council of people who want to build alliances that help protect and nurture the animate Earth.

Please share this invitation with anyone you think might be interested or that should be part of the gathering. We would like to reach out to anyone in the Nordic countries who are working for the rights of nature as an activist, academic, artist or concerned citizen.

The conference is supported by Folkesparekassens Fond and Himmelbjerggården - Nordisk Inspirationscenter. We are working to secure additional funding to cover the cost of travel and participation for participants coming from further away.

We are thrilled that Folkesparekassens Fond has chosen to support our effort to establish a gathering of people working for the rights of nature in the Nordic countries. Thank you! The gathering will be held in connection with Nature's Constitutional Assembly on June 7th.

Save the date 🎯 The programme and registration will be published next week but we are happy that 𝗣𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗹, 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 and 𝗟𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝘂𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻 have agreed to be keynotes.

The conference seeks to create a necessary and courageous space for new thinking — a place where 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗮, 𝗮𝗿𝘁, 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗷𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. We need to develop our democratic institutions and protect the rights of nature in order to ensure that coming generations have a foundation to build their lives on.

By bringing together actors from across the Nordic region, the conference aims to inspire a new democratic culture in which nature is no longer seen merely as a resource, but as a partner and co-player in the development of society. - from David Whyte's poem Finisterre

We are entering the Winter Solstice and the darkest time of the year, the zero point, where everything exhales and pauses on the threshold before we slowly begin to inhale the next shared breath: the next year that awaits us on the other side. It is a moment when the wave of time has pushed us as far as it can before pulling us back in the other direction. It is a moment when we can leave behind the baggage we no longer need, empty our bags, as David Whyte writes, and find another way to move forward.

It feels important to take a moment to light a candle and consider the way forward. Change is coming ever faster, whether you look at the bushes in the garden blooming mid-December or listen to the drums of war rumbling louder and louder on the horizon. What do we do when the changes move inwards from the horizon – so close that it is no longer just a matter of keeping up with inflation, keeping the news flow at bay and enduring the suffering unfolding in Gaza, Sudan, Syria, Yemen, Ukraine, [insert your own place of suffering here]?

While the madness seems to be reaching new heights all the time, it has become clear that there will not be a time in the near future, in a few years or even decades, when we will return to what we thought was normal at the beginning of this century. We will not be living in a consumer society like we did in the 2000s again – unless it is inside a fascist regime. So what will we take with us into the coming change? What do we need? What will we cultivate and strengthen? Can we lean into a shared humanity where we are connected to the Earth and to each other?

At EarthWays, we will continue to work towards this in the new year, and we send all who read these words our warmest greetings and wishes for peace, light and joy this Christmas and New Year. It has been an exciting year for the association, and we enter 2026 with a wish to tread new paths.

Here's comes an unusual newsletter, which is essentially an offer for those who feel overwhelmed or lonely or powerless in the face of the horror we are witnessing in Gaza.

Some weeks ago I felt an unbearable chasm between the life I live in Denmark and the suffering that is the ongoing genocide. I fear that what is at stake at this moment is not just a descent into greater chaos or suffering for the majority of human beings on this planet but our humanity itself. As Simone Weil writes, love is the belief in the existence of other human beings, and if we close our eyes to those human beings, or worse, begin seeing them as other or less than human beings, we lose touch with the humanity at the core of our existence.

Therefore, I have been searching for ways to manifest the humanity of myself and others. I started praying for an end to the suffering in Palestine and to my surprise, my inner world started shifting. I don't think of myself as religious and I have not been brought up in any spiritual tradition but the power of praying seemed to come forward on its own volition. So some of us are going to meet on Sunday for half an hour between 21-21.00 CEST to pray for Gaza. There will be singing and a sharing of poetry and then we will just sit together for a little while. You are welcome to join, should you feel inclined:

Sunday 14th of September I will begin a walk from Himmelbjerget down south to the border with Germany as a kind of walking prayer. We will meet at Himmelbjerggården at 10.30 on Sunday September 14th for half an hour to begin the walk. You are welcome to join this as well.

In connection with the walk I am collecting donations for direct aid to Gaza together with my wife. This will go to the Palestinian organisation Taawon Welfare Association and their campaign "Gaza Emergency Relief". You can read more about his and soon you can also donate via this page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61579938913803

The late summer is ending on a warm and dry note as the Northen hemisphere slowly slips into autumn. This familiar change feels good against the background of the extreme weather all around the globe this summer. And it is not just the climate that is going crazy, human beings are too. Or, perhaps it is better to say, a particular kind of human beings. Those that reach for control, power and a continuation of the industrialization of the planet. As this year has progressed it has seemed harder and harder to bear the ongoing genocide in Gaza until the point where it has become unbearable. And still we have to bear it because the catastrophe goes on. The suffering deepens. What can we do?

Even if crying or praying or witnessing is all we can do, it matters. We have to retain our humanity in this situation despite the overwhelming forces that are trying to divide us and deprive us from our human connection. We can find solace in the stories of connection, comfort in the knowing that we belong. But we also need to question our stories – “listen to the histories that we were 𝘯𝘰𝘵 told”, as Patty Krawec says – to understand how we got to where we are. A good place to start is the heart-warming – and wrenching – film 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝗻𝗴 which tells both creation stories and histories of colonization with indigenous voices from all over the planet (https://theeternalsong.org/). There is a direct connection from those stories of eradication to what is going on in Gaza today. Knowing those stories is a step towards learning the songs of humanity that are buried beneath the horror.

The greeting "happy summer" seems a little much considering that we are living through a live-streamed genocide, accelerating climate change and the unrestrained exercise of raw power that we are witnessing right now. In Danish we say "god sommer" – good summer – which seems a little more appropriate: here's hoping you may have a good summer despite the current global state of affairs because we must not forget to bring goodness, conviviality and care to ourselves and all our relations no matter what is happening around us.

In fact, perhaps more pressing than ever is the softness, openness, friendliness and peace we can bring to the moment. In a weird sort of rebellious way this can seem like a way of defying the intent of the dark forces that are operating on the basis of viewing everything – humans, nature, creation – as a means to something else (most often personal gain). The more we are able to let go of this view, which after all is a cornerstone of the materialistic culture most of us have grown up in, the freer we may become.

David Bohm worked from this insight for most of the last part of his life. He sought to find ways of conversing and interacting that does not lock us into oppositional positions. His key message is that we cannot think our way out of our problems and we cannot create real change when we treat the world as a set of problems to be solved. Rather, we have to let go of that disposition and enter into a different way of being, one that doesn't seek to win arguments, control outcomes or gratify our egos. This can be a hard practice but it does open up for another way of moving in life – one that isn't caught up in "what must happen" in order for the future to turn out OK.

So this is our wish for you and the coming months, here at the height of the solar year: may you find peace where you are – and friends with which to share your warmth and humanity.
