Our ‘Cities, Culture and Politics’ course visited Urban 13 for a talk by Bettina Werner, co-founder of COurban design collective, who spoke about public participation and the importance of addressing exclusion, privilege and bias in planning. That was with particular reference to COurban’s projects in Nørrebro and Nordvest based on an intersectional feminist approach, including one that worked with young women and girls about how to make the public space beneath Bispeengbuen, Copenhagen’s elevated highway, more inclusive and inviting for all. Another has been focusing on loneliness and how research can inform planning initiatives to address experiences of isolation.

Visiting Øens Have in Copenhagen earlier this term, we explored the potentials as well as challenges facing urban farms and community gardening in relation to creating sustainable and liveable cities. After a tour of the urban farm, we discussed these themes, also with input from recent NUPS graduate David Clark, who presented on his research about cultivating participation and gardening activism.

The Norwegian skies have provided some spectacular displays this autumn. These are from a trip to the North Cape, the northernmost point of mainland Europe where a group of us visited after taking the Arctic Cities fieldcourse this semester. Having been introduced to different cities in the provinces of Troms and Finnmark, we travelled independently to Alta and Hammerfest. In contrast to Tromsø, which is a center point of northern Norway and a magnet for tourists, Alta and especially Hammerfest are more industrial. We spent two nights in a beautiful, cozy and remote cabin where we got to see the clearest northern lights without any light pollution.

The last photo is the PUST sauna in Tromsø’s historic harbour, where we have enjoyed taking a cold dip with a great view of Tromsdalen valley.
