Friday - On our way home... It has been a long journey already. Due to the TSA strikes, we decided not to go out in Chicago as we were advised against it. That meant almost 10 hours in the airport before being able to continue to Frankfurt. At least the time was spent trying to catch up on some sleep😅😴. We are currently in Frankfurt as per schedule and we expect to arrive in Billund as planned. We are all a bit tired, but the boys are being quite the champs about the long journey and still managing to keep a positive mood. Though many of us are already missing the tranquility of the beautiful mountains, we are all also looking forward to coming home 🤗.

Wednesday - We woke up early today to have a quick breakfast and finishing packing. Once we were done, we left at around 10:00 to the Diamond Center. That was quite large compared to other malls in Anchorage. It has an ice rink, a cinema, and a variety of stores. We had some free time, and later Nemo, Elias, Eskil, Birthe, and Chiara went bowling, while the others went to play in the arcade. Nemo was absolutely incredible and played a perfect game. A strike every throw.
After bowling, we all met up again and left the mall to go help with food sorting at the Alaska Food Bank. We sorted all kinds of beverages, from Monster to green tea, onto large pallets. It took about two hours to sort everything.
After that, it was time to head to the airport, with a quick stop at Wendy's.
At the airport, we dropped off our bags and checked in. Then we had some free time to walk around and buy food.
Now we are waiting to board the first flight of our long journey back to Denmark.

Tuesday - Today we split up into two groups, and the students were allowed to choose which group they wanted to be in. One group went on a walk on the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, while the other group stayed at home and prepared some competitions for after the trip. The walk was a long and beautiful one along the coastline of Anchorage, where we could see huge mountains in the distance. Although it was very scenic, it was also extremely cold. In the end, we got so cold that we had to turn around before reaching the place we had originally planned to go to. But we still managed almost 6 km!
When we got back home, we had some free time to do whatever we wanted. At around 3:00 pm, we went volunteering at the Lutheran Church of Hope Mobile Food Pantry. We helped distribute food, chocolate milk, and regular milk to locals in need. It felt really good to give something back, especially since we had been welcomed so warmly by the people and culture of Alaska. Stephanie and Kent from our first trip day were also there helping, as they regularly volunteer.
Afterwards, we went home to warm up, since it had been so cold standing outside while handing out the food and drinks.
Later we had dinner. We ate tortillas, and they were really delicious.
All in all, it was an interesting and fun day.

Monday - Today we started the morning with eggs and bagels in our new house. We left a little later than planned and drove up to an altitude of about 660 meters to go on a hike. The hike took place at the Glen Alps Trailhead in Chugach State Park with a Flattop Trail system. The original plan was to hike the Flattop Mountain Trail all the way to the summit of Flattop Mountain. However, the hiking conditions were worse than expected, and the teachers decided to change the plan because safety could no longer be guaranteed. Instead, we hiked the Blueberry Loop Trail on Blueberry Knoll. Even though we had a great view, it was still a little disappointing.
After that, we had about two hours of free time in Anchorage to work on our task of meeting locals. We were supposed to interview an Alaskan and ask them our prepped research-questions. Some of us managed to find someone to interview, while others didn’t.
When we got back to the house, Eskil, Nemo, and Axel were in charge of cooking burgers, which actually took quite a long time. Is the long wait worth it? Yes, definitely! After dinner we talked about our plans for tomorrow, and now we are just relaxing and doing our own things. Overall, it was a really fun day.

Sunday - Today we woke up at around 8 o’clock to pack up and get moving. We drove a short distance to the Two Lakes Trail in Seward. The hike was very short, about one mile long, and took around 30 minutes to complete, but it was still a nice way to start the morning. However, the trail was quite slippery in many places, which made it a bit of a tricky and funny experience at times. The hike was also meant as a small test hike so that we could better estimate the longer hike we are planning to do the next day. 🥾🌲🏔️
After the hike we began our longer carjourney towards Anchorage. On the way to the house we stopped at a card shop and McDonald’s. Some of the guys were very excited about the Pokémon cards and even made a few big additions to their collections.
When we arrived at the house, we unpacked the car and rested for a bit. Later we were divided into groups to plan the meals for the next few days. Each group was responsible for a dish, and afterwards we went shopping for the ingredients we needed. Today’s dinner was a very special meal consisting of chicken nuggets, rice, and lettuce.

All in all, it was a quieter day due to the long distance we had to travel. 🚙

Saturday - Today we woke up a bit later again and had breakfast. At 11:00 we went to the harbor in Seward to get on a marine tour to see different kinds of marine wildlife. The tour started from Seward, and we were fully dressed up in warm clothes so we would not freeze on the water.
During the tour we discovered the amazing wildlife of Kenai Fjords National Park, which is surrounded by steep mountain walls and glacier-carved fjords. We saw bald eagles, sea otters, sea lions, mountain goats, and porpoises. However, some of us started at some point to feel a little seasick because the boat rocked from side to side on the waves.
We returned to the harbor at 16:20. Afterwards the guys needed to play Pokémon Go and said that the half hour until 17:00 was the most important hour in the game of the day.
Later we had pizza for dinner. Axel said that he could finish a whole pizza and a half, but he gave up after his sixth slice. 🍕

We started the morning after a long and good night of sleep in Girdwood. At 9:30 we packed the car and drove to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, which is a large wildlife sanctuary that rescues injured and orphaned animals and gives them a safe place to live while also educating visitors about Alaska’s wildlife.
When we arrived, we met a very friendly lady who gave us a tour around the center. We were all pretty excited to see the animals, especially the bears. Unfortunately, the black bears were still in hibernation, but we did get to see a brown bear. It was lying down and half asleep, but we could still see it moving a little.
Then we continued to a viewpoint where beluga whales can sometimes be seen, but they usually arrive in April. While we were there, we played some Pokémon Go, but Birthe drove away from the Pokémon gym too quickly, so we lost an item and a Pokémon.
After that, we drove to a nice place to eat lunch. The spot was very pretty and quite remote. It was on the side of a small road with lots of trees around it.
Later we made a short stop at Whittier Harbor. To get there, we had to drive through a long tunnel through the mountains. Almost everything at the harbor was frozen and slippery: the parking lot, the harbor basin, and the footbridges.
After we finished there, we continued our drive to Seward. On the way we saw many beautiful things, like a sparkling river and huge mountains covered with snow.
When we arrived at our lodge, we went shopping for dinner and lunch for the next day. In the evening we cooked spaghetti carbonara, which was delicious. We also celebrated Nemo’s 16th birthday. 🎉

On Thursday we woke up extremely cold. It was -30 degrees celsius and we were huddling around the heater to get warm. To breakfast we ran over to Joshua Robbins yurd where there was heat and hot chocolate. We got warm and went back to the tents to pack up. We were done rather quickly but with the cold weather we were all freezing again.
Joshua went to prepare kibble and snacks for the dogs while the rest of us stuffed our luggage inside the back of the car.
When the kibble was ready we all walked out to the dogs one last time and fed them.
After that we said thanks for the Joshua’s warm welcome and everything, that we could experience and learn through him.
On our way to Girdwood we stopped along the highway to take some beautiful pictures of the mountains and ice fjord. The mountains were towering over us like Birthes watchful eye. It was absolutely mesmerizing, otherworldly stunning, radiating with the purest beauty on earth and left us all completely speechless.
We arrived in Girdwood and checked in to this small, local and cozy hotel with the softest beds which were much appreciated after our adventure. We packed out, showered and got some much needed rest. We ate at a local restaurant and got burgers with elk, boar and wagyu patties.

On Wednesday we woke up a little late and drove to a small local village in Talkeetna. There we visited a store and saw some beautiful ice sculptures ❄️. After that, we went to Subway for brunch, which was really delicious.
Later we drove to a frozen lake where we walked all the way across it and even played some American football on the ice.
After that we met Joshua Robbins. After serving in the army, he became a dog musher and now has about 30 sled dogs as well as some reindeer and caribou. Through his work he helps veterans who have served in the military and are struggling with their mental health. This is a serious problem in the United States, and Joshua tries to support these people with his Outreach22 project, by working through donations with the veterans and the dogs.

While walking around his property, we noticed that many trees in the area were damaged. At first we thought it might be the Japanese spruce bark beetle, but Joshua explained that the damage actually came from the Sockeye Wildfire in 2015, which burned about 4,000 acres of land. Because of this, Joshua started another local project where he plants new trees in the area.
At Joshua’s place we first set up our heated tents for the night. Joshua used his snow machine to help transport our bags and also gave us some fun rides.
Later we went on a dog sled ride around his property 🐶. Afterwards we were able to feed the dogs and the reindeer. Joshua also told us a lot about the dogs and explained the different roles the dogs have in a sled team depending on where they run.
To get the full Outdoor Boys–style adventure, we also ate some nice food outside in the snow. While we slept in the heated tents, it was around –30 °C outside. Inside the tent it was warm, but we were still a little cold. Even though we could have moved into Joshua’s yurt, everyone decided to stick it out in the tents.
We also got to see the Northern Lights again. ✨

Today was a really fun and interesting day on our Alaska culture trip. In the morning we visited the Alaska Native Heritage Center. During our visit, we learned about a lot of different Native cultures and tribes from across Alaska. Our guide showed us how people from these communities traditionally lived, including the types of homes they built and how they adapted to Alaska’s environment and seasons. It was fascinating to see how each culture has its own traditions, tools, and ways of life. After the tour, two boys and a girl performed some traditional Alaska Native games and dances for us. They also explained how these activities have been passed down through generations. It was really fun to watch and gave us a better understanding of their culture. Later in the day we traveled to Talkeetna, where we are staying for the night. From our hotel we had an amazing view of Denali. The mountain looked absolutely stunning in the distance. After we had looked at the view for a while, we had gotten some tubes for sledding down the side of a small hill at the hotel. It was the most fun I think most of us had had in a long time. We tried digging underneath the snow, to make an igloo, but we failed and the snow collapsed. Combined with a small glimpse of the northern lights, it was a great way to end the day. We also saw our first two moose in the wild today. 🫎
