Biomedical Engineering at DTU

Biomedical Engineering at DTU Offered jointly by The Technical Univ. of Denmark and The Faculty of Health Sciences at Univ. of Copenhagen.

Biomedical engineering is the application of engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and technology for healthcare purposes. The Master’s programme in Biomedical Engineering at DTU is an interdisciplinary education jointly offered by the groups involved in Biomedical Engineering at Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the Faculty of Health Sciences at University of Copenhagen (

UCPH). Students are enrolled at both universities and spend 70 per cent of their time at DTU and 30 per cent at University of Copenhagen with access to the huge wealth of courses at both universities. The many major hospitals and biomedical companies in Greater Copenhagen also contribute and are heavily involved in the programme giving lectures and offering student projects.

Dear students,

Come join the Biomedical Engineering Study Board (educational committee, "studieudvalget") that is a group of student and lecturer/staff representatives! We meet ~2.5 hours every half year to discuss the BSc and MSc Biomedical Engineering educations. Occasionally we missed meetings, but regular discussion is important, and your reminders and suggestions for topics are always very welcome.

To make the education a great experience for everyone, we need student representatives from all stages of it (early to late BSc, early to late MSc). Also, we want to have both the national and international perspectives represented, so the meetings will be in English, but you can express yourself in Danish, if preferred. Participation of ~8-10 student representatives seem optimal. Currently, there are fewer in the board, so for now, we invite all in. If the interest is overwhelming, then you will need to somehow select a balanced choice of
representatives, but that "luxury problem" we can only hope for :-) You can contact any of the Heads of Studies, if you are willing to join the study board or try it out.

As a new initiative, we will try to focus the meetings more, and invite participants (beyond students) with particular interest in the chosen
topics. The next meeting is scheduled for June 24th 13:30-16:00. The topics are the following (meeting details and supplementary materials will follow):
• Approval of minutes
• Approval of agenda
• Presentation of members
• Status for Study Onboarding Events in the week before semester start.
• Status on the mandatory learning outcomes in DTU's BSc programme and how they influence programme structure and course responsibilities.
• Brief overview of programme-specific courses in the BME BSc/MSc educations, including new courses.
• First lecturer/student experiences with the new BSc course 22460 "Introduction to Biomedical Engineering"/"Medicoteknisk ingeniørarbejde". Did it help -- also in relation to other courses?
• The role of the KU Health courses in the education. How do they fit with respect to timing and content (BSc in particular)?
• Announcements
• Around the table

Kind regards,
Tine (BSc and MSc HoS, KU Health and Medical Sciences, [email protected])
Kaj-Åge (BSc HoS, DTU Health Tech, [email protected])
Lars (MSc HoS, DTU Health Tech, [email protected])

Join DTU BioBuilders in the World’s largest synthetic biology competition!

Do you want to work on a student-driven project and get the chance to compete in the iGEM Grand Jamboree? Then join the DTU BioBuilders 2026!

The DTU BioBuilders represent DTU in iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machines), the World Championship in Synthethic Biology, with more than 400 teams from all around the World. The iGEM competition culminates in the Grand Jamboree held in Paris during November 2026.
Interested in joining? We will host an information event about iGEM and DTU BioBuilders in Arena in DTU SkyLab (Centrifugevej 374, 2800 Kongens Lyngby) on Thursday the 25th of September starting at 17:30! We will buy food for all participants, but please sign-up for food for the event, https://forms.gle/EyqAERLNmrHcvy4Q6, so we ensure there’s enough for everyone.

What are you going to do as a BioBuilder?
Throughout the year, you will work to solve a real-world problem using synthetic biology as part of a student-driven scientific research group, finding solutions to major World challenges. The efforts are distributed across 12 months involving planning, developing, and ex*****on of your own exciting research project including experimental design, raising funds, engaging with companies, coding your own website, designing outreach material, and building strong friendships with the other participants.

Who do we need?
iGEM is an interdisciplinary engineering competition, requiring students from multiple engineering fields. Being part of the team is about much more than “just science” as the best teams bring together diverse competences, complementary skills, and knowledge. Thus, all backgrounds are welcome (both on the BSc and MSc level from all study lines), for enthusiastic, committed, open minded, hardworking and eager to learn students - we have been waiting for you!

Why join?
iGEM is truly an international and amazing event (https://igem.org), which is important for DTU and it's international profile, which consequently qualifies the DTU BioBuilders to be among DTU’s prestige projects, the Blue Dot projects (https://blue-dot.dtu.dk/english/). Additionally, the DTU BioBuilders team is actively involved with the Innovation Hub of DTU, SkyLab (https://www.skylab.dtu.dk), since bio-entrepreneurship is the next step for your idea to become reality. In order to help manage your study plan, you can receive up to 15 ECTS points by participating in iGEM with the DTU BioBuilders. Finally, you get a trip to Paris with your fellow teammates, where you'll defend the project and learn about many other synthetic biology projects.

How do I join?
To apply for a team membership, fill out this form (https://forms.gle/9aJKEPGzb7aszQs89) asking for general information, your technical background and availability throughout the project period. This application should take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. The deadline is Saturday the 27th of September. You don’t need to fill out the form before you join the information event, but we encourage it.

We will carefully review the responses from the questionnaires, and based on your answers, you may be selected to join the team.

If you have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to the DTU BioBuilders PI, Kristian Barrett ([email protected])
