Normally, he is responsible for ensuring that passengers on the high-speed ferry arrive safely and dry-footed on Bornholm. However, in his spare time, Kasper Sommer has charted his own course. The 43-year-old captain has recently completed an Executive MBA, which he studied online through the IBA International Business Academy in Kolding.

“I undertook the programme for personal reasons, to develop myself further and broaden my knowledge. I have no immediate plans to change career, but the MBA places me in a stronger position for the future, as I do not know what I may want to do in two, ten or fifteen years’ time,” says Kasper.

As a captain, he works irregular hours, so the flexibility of studying online through the IBA suited his rota perfectly. Students can complete the programme at times that suit them, meaning there is no need to be available at specific times to attend classes.

“It turned out to be an excellent fit for me. I could study whenever there was natural space in my work schedule. Sometimes I also used my breaks during the day. If I had half an hour or an hour to spare, I could sit down and study, so it worked perfectly,” says Kasper.

THEY MUST CRACK THE REALLY TOUGH NUTS
Think fast. Think critically. Be creative!

That is the job description for the IBA’s two razor-sharp Case Teams. The two teams will represent the IBA at international talent competitions, where they will provide intelligent solutions to complex business challenges.

For example, they might analyse a company considering entering a new market. What are the advantages and disadvantages? How can the company succeed in overcoming the challenge?

Their first assignment will already take place from 17 to 23 May, when one of the teams travels to the Netherlands to compete in The International Case Competition. At Maastricht University, the IBA talents will compete against 15 international teams. The team (pictured) consists of Megi Badashvili, Tamar Museridze, Alisa Dubinina and Niki Poncsác.

“Why not try something new and develop my skills? That is why I applied to join the IBA’s Case Team. We will be working on practical tasks that require analytical thinking, so it is excellent training for the brain,” smiles Tamar Museridze, an exchange student from Georgia.

“I am looking forward to networking with all the participants from the many countries we will meet at the competitions. And I think it will be exciting to work under pressure. Even though we have to work quickly, we must still be able to handle the pressure and come up with creative ideas,” says Latvian student Alisa Dubinia, who has lived in Denmark for seven years and studies Multimedia Design at the IBA.

The IBA is an accredited member of the Network of International Business Schools (NIBS), which organises the framework for the international talent competitions for students. The main competition – the NIBS Worldwide Case Competition – has a history spanning more than 30 years.

FOR 10 YEARS, THE IBA HAS BEEN SHARING NEW KNOWLEDGE ABOUT CHINA

The auditorium was full last week when the IBA in Kolding hosted the China Business Forum. Participants gathered to celebrate the event’s 10th anniversary, having first been held at the IBA in 2016.

Behind the initiative is the IBA Confucius Institute, which is involved in Chinese language teaching, study trips to Shanghai, cultural exchange and business networking.

“We are proud that more than 150 participants, representing over 80 different companies and organisations, have registered for the China Business Forum and filled this auditorium to capacity.
The strong support clearly reflects the growing interest in China and confirms that the work we are carrying out here at the IBA is both important and meaningful,” said the IBA’s Rector, Carsten Vikkelsøe, during his welcome speech.

The China Business Forum focuses sharply – and timely – on the crucial role China plays in the global economy. Once again, participants left the forum with both new knowledge and fresh inspiration.

This was naturally thanks to the insightful presentations from China analyst Christina Boutrup, the Confederation of Danish Industry’s China expert Peter Bøgh Hansen, Professor Mette Thunø from Aarhus University, and Hao Yin, CEO of TEGnology.

Among other topics, Christina Boutrup explained why it is important to be first with new products. Being first often sets the direction and standards for an entire industry. As a result, this is a position the Chinese are fiercely determined to secure.

They achieve this by launching new products onto the market at lightning speed, refining and improving them afterwards.

“In China, they do not have all the answers in advance either. However, in their development work they focus on the old saying about constantly searching for new stepping stones until the river has been crossed.
They do not wait to take the first step until the entire route has been planned. That is an approach we in Europe could certainly learn from,” she explained.

THE IBA WELCOMES VISITORS FROM 30 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES

The sun was shining over Kolding last week, and the beautiful Danish spring provided the perfect setting for this year’s NIBS conference, hosted by the IBA.

NIBS stands for the Network of International Business Schools, and representatives from 30 countries are visiting the IBA this week.

The conference focuses on how international collaboration can help develop education, research and scholarship for the benefit of students and staff at the many institutions that are members of the NIBS network.

As this year’s conference is being held in Denmark, Hans van Oudheusden, President of NIBS, compares international collaboration to the strong building power of LEGO bricks.

“Collaboration helps provide strength and relevance in a world that is increasingly complex and uncertain. Like LEGO bricks, we build something together that is stronger and more robust.”

THE IBA STRENGTHENS COLLABORATIONS ON INTERNATIONAL ONLINE DEGREE PROGRAMMES

“The IBA is a really strong brand. You have built an excellent reputation, which has continued to grow throughout the twenty years I have worked with you.”

Professor Phil Cardew describes his close relationship with the IBA over the past two decades in these terms. He serves as Deputy Vice Chancellor at Leeds Beckett University, which partners with the IBA to deliver English-language online bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes.

“At Leeds Beckett University, we look forward to developing our collaboration with the IBA even further. We have therefore agreed to establish a strategy outlining how we will strengthen our partnership over the next five years,” says Phil Cardew.

The IBA and Leeds Beckett University collaborate on a range of bachelor’s and master’s programmes within leadership, business, and sustainability. All teaching takes place online, allowing students to adapt their studies to fit around their everyday lives. The programmes’ standards and content are approved by the British university, which also awards the degree certificates. However, the IBA is responsible for both teaching and student guidance.

“The world has become significantly more globalised and digitalised over the past ten years alone. That is why international educational partnerships are so important, as they provide students with a shared understanding and a broader perspective,” says Phil Cardew.
