📢 CBS-MUBS Collaborative Field Course: Bridging Theory and Practice in Uganda 📢
From March 30 to April 17, 30 students and 3 professors from Copenhagen Business School (CBS) traveled to Uganda to participate in the field-based course “Field Study: Entrepreneurship and Private Sector Development in Uganda.” Hosted by Makerere University Business School (MUBS), the CBS group was joined by 30 MUBS students and 4 course facilitators for an immersive and collaborative learning experience.
Now in its 12th edition, the course was born out of the Danida-funded Youth and Employment: The Role of Entrepreneurship in African Economies (YEMP) project, which ran from 2009–2014 and involved several MUBS faculty members. It was originally designed in response to students’ desire for more hands-on, real-world learning experiences. The course aims to bridge academic theory and practice, strengthen students' research and methodological skills, and cultivate intercultural competencies.
Over the three-week program, students formed mixed groups of four—two from CBS and two from MUBS—and engaged in an intense learning journey. The first week included lectures on intercultural collaboration, research methods, and fieldwork ethics. Students then designed their own research questions and developed instruments for field data collection.
📍Fieldwork took place across diverse entrepreneurial environments in Kampala, with supervision from MUBS and CBS facilitators. In the final week, students analyzed their data, prepared research reports, and presented their findings to peers and faculty.
This year’s student research projects explored a wide range of pertinent topics, including:
✅ The empowerment of women in the clean cooking sector
✅ Resource mobilization strategies in community-based organizations
✅ Working conditions of garbage collectors and waste pickers
✅ Recycling plastic into art and craft products
✅ The adoption of digital technologies in small-scale fashion retail
✅ The evolution of fintech business models
✅ Boda boda riders’ access to microfinance
✅ Experiences of female performers in Kampala’s entertainment industry
✅ The gig economy's impact on tour guides in Uganda.
✅ Social capital in young coffee roasters' entrepreneurship
✅ Informal entrepreneurs' strategies against Chinese supplier dominance
✅ Empowerment of disenfranchised women through social enterprises
Students conducted their research in a variety of settings, from markets and low-income neighborhoods to retail shops, home-based enterprises, music studios, and offices of government agencies, microfinance institutions, and tech companies. Their research methods ranged from surveys and semi-structured interviews to focus group discussions and participatory drawing techniques.

A GREEN AND JUST TRANSITION FOR ALL. Can the private sector deliver?
The green transition is crucial to combat climate change, and the private sector has an important role with its knowledge and financial capabilities.
But this must not come at the expense of human rights, environmental protection and social justice in low-income countries and some of the most sensitive natural areas in the world.
We have invited some of the world´s leading experts and key stakeholders from civil society, private sector, human rights organizations and Danish government to discuss how the private sector take responsibility and help ensure that the world's escalating need for renewable energy and rush for critical minerals does NOT exacerbate the global inequalities and social injustice that the climate crisis is already creating.

For 40 years, Band Aid has profited from African suffering to fuel Western compassion. If Ethiopian suffering creates value in the charity economy, Ethiopians should be paid for it.

‘Bob Geldof Pay Your Ethiopian Workers’
For 40 years now, Ethiopians specifically, and Africans in general, have been doing the work of being worthy recipients for band aid. Now, they should be recognized for that work and rewarded as workers. As I have argued here, Africa has become a market for profiting from Whiteness. Thus, the reason...
