A Different Kind of Toastmasters Evening – and an Important One!

Our last meeting at the Esbjerg Toastmasters Club was a little different from our usual meetings, as we held our annual General Assembly and elected our new Board.

While speeches and evaluations are at the heart of Toastmasters, the Board plays a vital role behind the scenes. Board members help shape the direction of the club, ensure meetings run smoothly, support members' growth, and create an environment where everyone can learn and thrive. Taking on a Board role is also a fantastic opportunity to develop leadership skills, gain practical experience, and contribute to the success of the club and its members.

A big thank you to everyone who has served on the Board and congratulations to our newly elected team!

Of course, it wouldn't be a Toastmasters meeting without some speaking practice. We also enjoyed a lively Table Topics session with a summer theme, which brought plenty of creativity, laughter, and spontaneous speaking moments.

What a fantastic evening at our latest Toastmasters meeting.

Our theme for the night was “The Lies We Tell Ourselves” - it one of those themes that everyone could relate to. It is not the dramatic lies… but the small everyday ones we tell ourselves to make life a little easier: “I’ll go to bed early tonight.” or “I’m not nervous at all.”

The theme reminded us how these little stories we create can be funny, comforting, ambitious, and sometimes completely unrealistic. They often become the source of our best stories, reflections, and moments of growth.

Our Word of the Day was “Embrace” — meaning to accept something willingly and wholeheartedly, or to welcome something with openness and positivity. A fitting word for an evening filled with honesty, courage, and personal stories.

A special highlight of the evening was Marieke’s Ice Breaker speech, “A Question That Stayed With Me.” Her speech truly resonated with the audience and ended with a standing ovation from the club members.

And next meeting will be a little different: alongside our regular activities, we will also hold our General Assembly, where members will vote for the new club board. An important moment for the future of our club - while still making space for learning, speaking, and fun together.

People in your life – why are they there?

That was the question we explored at our last meeting at Esbjerg Toastmasters.

Two speeches, two very different perspectives:
One took us into the world of dumpster diving — and how that experience reshaped the speaker’s relationship with money, friendships, and even herself.
The other was something many of us could relate to: procrastination.
Why do we postpone what we know we should do? And what happens if we keep waiting?
A simple but powerful reminder: sometimes, we just need to start — otherwise, it may never happen.

Our word of the day was gratitude - the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.

And maybe that’s what ties it all together:
The people in our lives, the lessons we learn, and the moments we choose to act — or not.

Curious to experience it yourself?

👉 Du får mulighed for at:

blive mere selvsikker, når du taler

We Go Again
Last meeting carried a theme that felt very fitting for the season - renewal, second chances, and starting again.

Instead of speeches, we tried something different: a debate.
And honestly, it was both fun and challenging in the best way. It pushed us to think faster, listen better, and respond in the moment - skills that don’t always get the spotlight in traditional speeches.

Our word of the day was “genuine.”
A simple word, but an important one. Being genuine means being real, sincere, and true to who you are. Not polished for the sake of perfection, but honest in how you show up. A good reminder that strong communication isn’t just about technique - it’s about authenticity.

Next meeting:
📍 Esbjerg Main Library
📅 April 22nd

Last meeting at Esbjerg Toastmasters, we traded nerves for celebration.

After the excitement of the Area Contest in Aarhus, our meeting theme “Afterparty” was exactly what we needed - a chance to unwind, reconnect, and simply enjoy speaking without pressure.

We had one prepared speech:
🎤 “A Toast to Those Who Rose” by Casper, reminding us that growth often comes from stepping up - especially when it feels uncomfortable.

Our Word of the Day was Euphoric - that feeling of intense happiness, excitement, or elation. And honestly, it fit the evening perfectly. We felt it during the whole meeting 😉

Now we move forward to the next meeting:

📅 8th April
📍 Esbjerg Library
⏰ 18:00–20:00

The agenda for our meeting this evening!

This time we have the meeting theme "Afterparty", in relation to the Toastmasters Area Contest that was held in Aarhus last weekend. It is a time for us to let go of the nerves we had leading up to the Area Contest, and just focus on having a relaxed good time.

This time we have 1 prepared speaker:
🎤"A Toast to Those Who Rose" by Casper (Motivational Strategies).

Followed up by a rather unusual activity in our club, which is a couple rounds of debate practice, and then our usual session of table topics, so we all have a chance to work on our impromptu speaking. 🗣️

If you're completely new to our club, and interested, you can:
👉Send us a message and we'll get you introduced!
👉Just show up, at least 5-10 minutes before we start.

It costs nothing to attend as a guest, so feel free to give it a shot!
