Seafood as strategic source of food in the context of climate change
Monday 13 December 2021
15.00-17.00 CET Online
Hosted by MEP Gabriel Mato
Co-organized in collaboration with the regional government of Galicia, Spain
Climate change has been revolutionizing our food systems. Consumers and producers alike are increasingly looking at options to make our diets sustainable under an ever-changing climate. Within this context, low-carbon animal proteins can play a role, but how can fisheries management innovate and refocus towards a more ecological objective of using, sustainably, marine resources instead of focusing on individual species? What are the preconditions for fisheries to contribute to new dietary patterns under changing climatic conditions? This event, organized under the umbrella of the European Parliament Intergroup on ‘Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development’, will try to answer these questions informing new directions for effectively-managed, resilient and sustainable fisheries. In this context, seafood represents a more climate-friendly source of animal protein than most land-based sources and this should be underlined when addressing the management of marine resources.

Climate change impacts are accelerating, and for many people, the past year has been a climate nightmare of flooding, fire, and record-shattering temperatures. And yet, we still have both the time and the tools to change the future. The work that we all do together over the next year, five years, ten years, will profoundly shape the world to come. In 2022, the social media interns will help engage half a million students, with their teachers, in serious dialog about what we can and must do to stabilize the climate.
Intern teams will design, deliver, and evaluate a social media campaign in support of The WorldWide Teach-In on Climate and Justice. Guest speakers and discussion will focus on the theory and practice of using social media to engage audiences in climate action. Interns who complete the program will receive a certificate, and can request letters of recommendation from Dr. Eban Goodstein, Director of the Bard Graduate Programs in Sustainability, which is the organization sponsoring the internship. Please direct questions to [email protected].

Available positions: 7 with scholarships
Objectives of the PhD
The main objective of the programme is to prepare scholars who can navigate the complex and multi-faceted dimensions of the grand challenges posed by climate change. It prepares experts with a broad and thorough scientific background in economics and climate science who can:
- Understand and explain the physical and economic nature of climate change
- Assess the physical, biophysical, and socio-economic impacts of climate change
- Deal with uncertainty
- Evaluate the socio-economic implications of mitigation and adaptation policies in the broader context of sustainable development
- Develop and apply interdisciplinary methodologies to analyse and design innovative climate policy solutions
- Synthesize and communicate the different dimensions of climate change and their uncertainties to different users – from the general public to policy makers and the scientific community
Organisation of the PhD Programme
The PhD in Science and Management of Climate Change is a 4 year programme. During the first year students complete their coursework in Venice, while from the second year onward they develop their research projects and work on their final PhD dissertations. After completion of the first year, PhD students are required to spend a period conducting research at a foreign institution or university, to be agreed with the tutor and approved by the PhD Board. All PhD thesis will be externally reviewed by international referees.
The programme comprises 12 core courses of 6 ECTS each, from a range of subject areas. Students benefit from a balance between teaching and learning through a mix of lectures, seminars, external speakers, discussion group exercises, and case studies. Credits are acquired by attending the courses and by passing a final exam. Attendance is mandatory. Seminars, guest lectures, and elective thematic courses are organized throughout the year in order to facilitate interaction among students from different cycles and different programmes, as well as with invited guests from important research centres and universities.
PhD students completing their studies and receiving their PhDs will also receive the qualification of MPhil in Science and Management of Climate Change at the end of their 4-year programme.

The objective of the conference is to provide students with an opportunity to present their work and receive feedback from members of the ecological economics community.
We welcome abstracts from undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers that explore themes related to ecological economics within the context or at the intersection of one of the following contemporary sub-themes:
1. Climate and energy
2. Ecosystem services, measurement, and valuation
3. Environmental justice, racial equity, and Indigenous issues
4. Natural capital, governance, management, and policy
5. Scale, ecological limits, and degrowth
Abstracts should include the following information
• Presenting author’s name, affiliation, and e-mail address
• Presenter category (i.e., undergraduate, Master’s, or PhD student, postdoctoral)
• Title of the poster presentation
• Body of the Abstract up to 300 words, including Background, Research Question, and Methods, in which the objective of the study and the methods are described; and Results and Conclusions, in which results of the study and their implications are discussed.
