We’re proud to share that Fabio Santos, Assistant Professor at AMIS, has been awarded the 2025 Rinus Penninx Best Paper Award at this year’s IMISCOE conference!
His winning paper, Decolonizing the Migration Archive: Haitian Refugees in Puerto Rico, is a historical analysis of Fort Allen, a U.S. military base in Puerto Rico repurposed for refugee detention in the 1980s, and illuminates the intersections of empire, racialized migration control, and historical erasure. Fabio’s work exemplifies the kind of critical and decolonial scholarship we support at AMIS.
We warmly congratulate Fabio on this well-deserved recognition and are thrilled to see his work celebrated at Europe’s largest network for migration research.
