Roundtable Discussion - Pivot to Asia: Denmark and Trump 2.0

The dramatic withdrawal of Trump’s America from the globalized world economy has shocked allies and foes alike. While the building of borders, economic and political, is not entirely unprecedented in history, what has caused anxiety is the rapid pace and scale of disruption to the long standing economic and security alliances that shaped the early twenty-first century. As old partnerships are tested, nations around the world seek new alliances and assurances. What kind of futures lie ahead especially for small nation-states in a rapidly reconfiguring landscape of world politics? We open this wide-ranging question from the vantage point of Denmark to consider possibilities and challenges that may await, especially in the course of what scholars have called the “pivot to Asia”, the shifting arch of world economy and politics.

Speakers:
- Michael Zilmer-Johns-Johns, Former Ambassador of Denmark to NATO
- Kjeld Erik Brødsgaard, Professor, CBS
- Elena Meyer-Clement, Associate Professor, ToRS UCPH
- Henrik Hansen, Professor, Economics UCPH

🏮Asian Dynamics Initiative invites all to the book launch of: 🏮

“The Road to Empire: The Political Education of Khalsa Sikhs in the Late 1600s” by author and earlier student of UCPH, Satnam Singh.

🗓 09. October 2024
🕝15.00 - 16.30
📍South Campus, room 10-3-28 (TORS Frokoststue)
ℹ️ https://asiandynamics.ku.dk/english/calendar/2024/the-road-to-empire/

From the late seventeenth century to the late eighteenth century, the Sikh community transformed from a relatively insignificant religious minority to an elevated position of kingship and empire. [...] In this book, Satnam Singh argues that the Sikhs’ increasing self-assertion was not simply a reaction to Mughal persecution but also a result of an active program initiated by the Guru to pursue larger visions of scholarship, conquest, and political sovereignty. Using a vast trove of understudied court literature, Singh shows how Sikhs grappled with Indo-Islamic traditions to forge their unique ideas of governance and kingship to establish an independent Sikh polity. The Road to Empire offers an impressive intellectual history of the early modern Sikh world.

All that Breathes:
In one of the world’s most populated cities, two brothers — Nadeem and Saud — devote their lives to the quixotic effort of protecting the black kite, a majestic bird of prey essential to the ecosystem of New Delhi that has been falling from the sky at alarming rates. Amid environmental toxicity and social unrest, the ‘kite brothers’ spend day and night caring for the creatures in their makeshift avian basement hospital.

Director Shaunak Sen (Cities of Sleep) explores the connection between the kites and the brothers who help them return to the skies, offering a mesmerizing chronicle of inter-species coexistence.

Spaces Beyond Belief (10.00-12.00 - Festsalen, Søndre Campus, UCPH)
Spaces Beyond Belief calls for a considerable expansion of commonly accepted historical narratives about sacred space in pre-modern East Asia. Focusing on late Chosŏn Buddhist temples as a case study, this study proposes an expanded understanding of religious space, highlighting the roles of artisan-monks actively engaged with elite artistic trends.

All That Breathes (15.00-18.00 - Festsalen, Søndre Campus, UCPH)
Two brothers — Nadeem and Saud — devote their lives to the quixotic effort of protecting the black kite, a majestic bird of prey essential to the ecosystem of New Delhi that has been falling from the sky at alarming rates. Osvaar-nominated director, Shaunak Sen (Cities of Sleep) explores the connection between the kites and the brothers who help them return to the skies, offering a mesmerizing chronicle of inter-species coexistence.

Community Based Art Practices in China and Europe: Resilience through Friendships (15.00-18.00 - Tofu collective, Læderstræde 15, KBH K)
In contested spaces, networks and communities become structures of solidarity and creativity. Created through encounters and conversation, they create the possibility to produce stories outside of the political mainstream.
