What started with students reflecting on food security, inequality and solidarity grew into a whole-school campaign that mobilised more than 600 people and collected over 3.7 tonnes of food for organisations supporting people in situations of social vulnerability.

The initiative, led by students at Escola da Criança - Espaço Adolescer (Uberlândia, Brazil) connected learning with real-world action through the Eco-Schools programme and Global Action Days 2026. The school community came together to turn students' ideas into meaningful change, almost tripling their original target of 1,280 kg.

A powerful example of how education for sustainability can connect knowledge, reflection, and action, resulting in a collective and collaborative campaign that empowers young people to become active citizens in their communities.

💡 From first ideas to first jobs

On 12 August, we celebrate International Youth Day and the many ways young people are already shaping environmental action across the Foundation for Environmental Education network.

Reflecting this year’s United Nations theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” young people are learning, participating, and leading at every stage across our six programmes.

So, where can you find youth across the FEE network? Pretty much everywhere. 👀

🍏 Through Eco-Schools, young people lead Eco-Committees and turn ideas into action across their schools and communities.

🌱 Through Learning about Ecosystems and Forests - LEAF, young learners step outside the classroom, connect with nature and explore the importance of protecting forests and biodiversity.

🎤 Through Young Reporters for the Environment, young people investigate environmental issues affecting their communities and use journalism, photography and video to share the stories that matter.

🎓 Through Eco-Campus, students drive change across their universities and colleges, deepening their knowledge while building skills and experience for what comes next.

🔑 Across Green Key, young professionals in the hospitality sector put sustainability into practice inside hotels and other establishments around the world.

🌊 Across Blue Flag, young professionals working at beaches, marinas and tourism boats help protect our coasts and promote more sustainable practices.

And that journey doesn't end when education does. Young people take those experiences into the wider world as educators, environmental and conservation professionals, community leaders, hospitality and tourism professionals, and colleagues across FEE’s 110+ member organisations.

Creating opportunities for young people to build experience, enter the environmental workforce, and have a say in the organisations driving change is an important part of that journey.

Next week, we’ll put that into practice at FEE Head Office. 👋 Through the FEE Internship Scheme, led by Eco-Campus, we’re welcoming our newest interns and creating opportunities for young people to gain hands-on professional experience while contributing to FEE’s work.

💧 Safe drinking water is something every child should be able to count on.

In Bangladesh, the Eco-Schools programme has helped transform three schools in Dhaka through the Safe Water for Greener Schools Initiative, bringing reliable access to safe drinking water to more than 1,000 students.

This initiative goes beyond installing water filtration systems. Through the Eco-Schools Seven Steps, students, teachers and local communities worked together to investigate the challenge, make evidence-based decisions, promote responsible water use, and reduce plastic pollution by introducing reusable water bottles.

The result is healthier learning environments, stronger environmental leadership, and a practical example of how Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) can address local challenges while contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Congratulations to Probha Aurora, FEE Member organisation and National Operator of the Eco-Schools programme in Bangladesh, and to everyone whose dedication helped bring this inspiring initiative to life. 🍏

🌊 When learning extends beyond the classroom, our oceans become the lesson.

In Zihuatanejo de Azueta, Guerrero, México, Blue Flag and Eco-Schools are working hand in hand to connect young people with their coastal environment through creative, hands-on learning experiences.

Throughout the year, students and local communities have explored marine conservation in many different ways, including:

🎨 Creating sand sculptures to celebrate 30 years of Eco Schools México
🖌️ Painting murals at beach access points inspired by local marine life
🧹 Joining community beach clean-ups to help protect local coastal ecosystems
🐟 Learning about sustainable cooking and responsible fishing alongside local chefs and fishers
🐢 Taking part in the annual Turtle Festival

By bringing together schools, municipalities, local organisations and Blue Flag beaches, these activities show how environmental education can strengthen community connections and inspire long-term care for our coasts.

A great example of how Blue Flag and Eco-Schools complement one another in creating meaningful learning experiences for people and planet.

🌐 A new chapter for Eco-Schools in Armenia! 🇦🇲

🟩 Just two years after launching the programme, Armenia has celebrated its first Green Flag Eco-Schools.

Since 2024, Synopsys for Good, Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and FEE member in Armenia ISSD - Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Development of Communities have worked together to establish Eco-Schools across the country.

Today, the programme has already reached 54 schools, with students, teachers and communities leading inspiring sustainability action through the Eco-Schools Seven Steps.

It was a privilege to visit the schools, celebrate their achievements at Armenia's first Green Flag Awards Ceremony, and see first-hand how project-based learning, STEM education and whole-school approaches are creating real impact.

"I am truly impressed by the seriousness, dedication and energy of the students in Armenia," said Olivia Copsey, Director of Education at the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

The journey is only just beginning. Working alongside the Ministry of Education, partners will now begin developing a national Greening Education Partnership Roadmap, supporting Armenia's ambition to green 50% of schools by 2030.

What happens when schools, students, educators and communities unite around sustainability? A season full of inspiration, collaboration and action across Spain. 🌱

From “Ecorrulo” fairs showcasing school projects to workshops, training activities, round tables and Green Flag ceremonies, over the past months Eco-Schools communities across Spain have come together to share experiences and celebrate sustainability achievements.

A special highlight was the Community of Madrid Eco-Schools Meeting, where 234 participants from 84 schools explored the theme of sustainable food and exchanged ideas with partner organisations and experts.

These gatherings demonstrate the strength of the Eco-Schools network to inspire peer learning, community engagement and intergenerational collaboration on the key national sustainability priorities.

The latest update from the World Meteorological Organization highlights that El Niño conditions are now developing, increasing the likelihood of more extreme weather in many regions over the coming months.
