Today, 74 years since the ship HMT Empire Windrush arrived in London, we're celebrating the Windrush Generation, and their invaluable contributions to British culture.
Phillips moved to London from Jamaica in 1956, aged 11, and joined his parents in Notting Hill. Kodak in hand, Phillips started to document his life and local community, capturing the richness and complexity of the landscape.
This was an era marked by violent racist assaults on the African-Caribbean community, and Phillips documented the 1958 Notting Hill “race riots” and the Black experience in London at this time. But his work also captures Black and white Londoners socialising together, laughing, drinking, partying. One of his best-known photographs, taken at a house party in 1967, has come to symbolise that spirit. The couple, Anita Santiago and Osmond (Gus) Philip, look into the camera with serious expressions—hopeful, innocent, defiant.

Go on Angela 🙏🏾
Anyone else struggling to fill these little squares with ‘meaningful’ content? I don’t like posting for the sake of it, so unless it’s relevant to what I’m doing or where I’m at I tend to give it a swerve.
For any new followers or those of you that don’t know much about me, I’m Ange and my little handmade jewellery brand is all about sustainability, style and longevity.
My aim is to make unique, timeless jewellery using ethically-sourced materials. I’m also passionate about recycling and love creating new jewellery from preloved or heirloom pieces (I’ve just finished a couple of lovely commissions which I’ll be sharing once they’ve been delivered to their new/old home).
Making bespoke pieces is a collaboration where everyone involved needs to feel comfortable. I’m pictured here looking very comfortable, wearing another recent sustainable collaboration. From my dodgy sketches and vague ideas, Sangita created this amazing patchwork denim dress. As a confirmed ‘denim head’, I’m blown away by her work.
Watch this space for my limited edition sustainable jewellery collaboration with . Feel free to DM or email me if you’re interested in a bespoke jewellery commission.
