On December 16th, 1944, the Germans launched the offensive later known as the Battle of the Bulge.
Very few publications mention the actions of the 9th Infantry Division and their role in stopping the Germans from pushing through in the Monschau / Hofen / Alzen / Kalterherberg / Elsenborn area. I have done extensive research and uncovered a lot of great details of the December events that will also be part of the book I am working on.
Some years ago, I wrote this short article with a few interesting details about some of the actions as well.
Ardennes-Alsace – The Ardennes – By mid-December the Allies were preparing to advance to the Rhine. Posed to cross the Ruhr River opposite the city of Duren, the 9th Infantry Division heard reports dur…

Wishing everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving Day.
In 1944, Thanksgiving Day was on Thursday 23rd of November. The men of the 9th Infantry Division were celebrating this evening the best they could in the Hurtgen Forest area.

June 6th, 1944. D-Day. The invasion of Normandy. A new battle front was opened. Being a veteran Division with previous Invasion experience, the 9th Infantry Division did not have to participate in the first days of the invasion. Their battle experience was needed in the mission to cut off the Cherbourg Peninsula. From June 10th 1944 onward, men of the Ninth landed on the Normandy beaches, and would start their Normandy campaign on June 14th, 1944.Before the men left, they received this letter, written by the Division General, Manton Eddy. It reads:
Headquarters Ninth Infantry Division
A.P.O. #9
June 1944
Soldiers of the Ninth Division:
The hour for the greatest adventure of our lives is at hand. I have the greatest faith that the officers and men of this Division will meet the enemy as men of America would - with determination and a fury that will strike fear to the heart of the German soldier. No one knows better then we that he is not the “superman” his wicked leaders have tried to make us think he is. We know that man for man we are better then he.
Faith in a righteous cause and faith in our ability to defend that cause will win. A righteous cause is something that God has given us and denied our enemy. History does not lie.
With determined hearts and with the help of God, which we now beseech him to give us, we are going to win this war - now!
Good luck and Godspeed,
M. S. Eddy

The extraordinary work of the cooks is often overlooked. While doing some research to an event I came across this wonderful citation for T/4 Charles T. Wright, who was a 1st Cook in the 60th Infantry Regiment. He made sure meals were brought up to the front with complete disregard for his own safety. For providing the meals to the men in these difficult circumstances, he was awarded a Bronze Star.
There are more stories of the bravery of the Cooks. Do you have any in regards to the 9th Infantry Division cooks? Feel free to share them.
(please note that the picture of the men is only for illustration purposes - this is not T/4 Wright). - Yuri

Men of the Ninth:
A few years ago, I received a special gift / donation through the daughter of 9th Infantry Division veteran Roy Larson. There were lots of pictures, a booklet and a great document signed by General Louis Craig about him awarding the Bronze Star Medal to Larson.
Sometime last year, the daughter contacted me again, telling me that she had also found the actual Bronze Star medal and wanted to donate it to me as well for future preservation. It was great to see everything complete like this.
If you have any items, photographs or items related to the 9th Infantry Division, please contact me, I would be very interested in learning more about these me through these items and preserve their legacies. Especially documents and pictures can provide a lot of information that can be used in my research.
Let’s take a moment to remember Roy Larson.
