"It's about translating chronic pain, and giving it a language."

Chronic pain affects millions, but because it's invisible to everyone but the sufferer, it has long been underinvestigated and misunderstood. Muskan Gupta's "Visible" gives pain a shape and structure, in a way that can be comprehended by others.

"This project is a small step—the beginning of a lifelong journey to strengthen the bonds, spark nostalgia, and carry forward our ancestral wisdom."

Technology is often a way forward; it can also be a powerful tool for looking back. Yase Dusu's "Heritage Remix" goes further than simply storing images and words, inviting users to engage with traditions and rituals from the Apatani community in Northeast India. More than just remembrance or nostalgia, the experience seeks to make these ancient festivals present and active, preserving them for future generations as well.

"How might we utilize design to develop permission in the space of creativity for adults?"

Interaction Design can mean screens, sensors and digital devices; it can also mean cards, words, and people drawing and talking. Wayne Kim's "Bureau of Sanctioned Sketching" is a thoughtfully designed game that uses instructional cards to give adults "permission" to draw, encouraging greater creativity and exploration through the careful application of constraints.

"I made this app for my younger cousin, who wants to play for the Indian national football team."

One of the great shifts in digital design over the past few years has the dramatic improvement in Augmented Reality (AR) platforms and game engines like Unity. Together, these tools make it possible to design AR solutions for a wide range of situations and environments that previously relied on physical interaction, such as sports. Sahil Islam's TacticQuest is one example: a platform designed in just a few weeks that teaches football tactics in a uniquely engaging way to aspiring players.

"There's no need for k***s or buttons, or any technical jargon... it lets music producers experiment with sound instead of going into theoretical practice."

These are still early days for gestural interface, and while the frenetic, intricate hand gestures of "Minority Report" may never work as a practical way for humans to control technology, there are plenty of other possibilities to explore. Gahan Rao's Arkade considers how gesture and movement might take the place of k***s and buttons in controlling and exploring something uniquely suited to a more organic form of control: music.

"The core value of product designers will shift from creating the interface to using ethical judgement and critical working with AI output."

Leon Fan's journey at CIID took him from a background in art curation to an active role in shaping the way product designers will interact with AI. His IDP final project "Beyond the Interface" is a flexible, customisable tool that gives each designer a say in how AI assists them in their tasks, in a way that maximises the value of human input while taking full advantage of the efficiency gains offered by this rapidly evolving technology.

What an incredible day! In Astino, Bergamo (Italy), right where the new CIID location is being built, we gathered with our community and many new friends for Fuorissimo Salone, our event during Milan Design Week 2024.

We hosted a series of inspirational talks and an exhibition of iconic pieces which showcased the evolution of human-machine interaction from Olivetti to Apple.

We want to express our gratitude to our fantastic speakers, Akshay Verma, Amit Aggarwal, Andrew Spitz, Clara Subirats Ribas, Martina Pagura, Pierluigi Dalla Rosa and Shamik Ray, who shared their different perspectives on some thought-provoking topics.

A huge thank you to the friends and partners of Magnetic Media Network for organising the exhibition.

And, of course, a special thanks to all those who came to Astino to be with us.

This was the first of what will be many insprational CIID public events at the Monastery of Astino, a place steeped in history where together with our community, we will write the next chapters for CIID.

Find out here about CIID and about the upcoming cohort of the Interaction Design Programme starting in Bergamo in September 2024 https://bit.ly/3VWwEpS

Our Italian location has been carefully selected in line with our purpose to approach design from a life-centred perspective. Situated in Bergamo in a biodiverse valley, the new studio will host the Interaction Design Programme, Pop-up Schools and Industry Projects.

Students, faculty and other thought leaders will come together in this beautiful studio to collaborate on projects and learn how to design solutions for social and environmental regeneration.

We are currently accepting applications for the Interaction Design Programme 2024. The new studio in Italy is just one of the many reasons to be a part of this experience. For more information on the curriculum, the admissions process and the location, please visit our website:
