O'Neill Indianapolis Major in Making a Difference at the O'Neill School of Public & Environmental Affairs IU Indianapolis O'Neill: Major in Making a Difference

At the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, students learn how to create safe, sustainable, and thriving communities. Our students learn how to work in government, nonprofit, and business roles to make positive changes in their communities, states, countries, and the world. O'Neill graduates lead the organizations that make and enforce laws, keep communities livable and safe, shape

smart public policy, protect the planet, and help our fellow citizens. Through the combined study of media and public affairs, civic leadership, management, policy studies, criminal justice and public safety, O'Neill students develop both the practical and philosophical skills that prepare them to develop solutions to society's problems. O'Neill is proud to be part of Indiana University, located in the heart of downtown Indianapolis.

Taking the next step in advancing your education is never easy -- but if you're brave enough to take on a master's degree, we'll be here to support you every step of the way. Last week, we welcomed some of our newest graduate students to O'Neill Indianapolis. They were able to network with each other and faculty, learn about the program they're about to join, and kick off their semester knowing what awaits them. Welcome to O'Neill!

The O'Neill School is expanding its Public Safety Management major into a new Community Resilience and Risk Management major to teach students how to help communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from a broader array of disaster and stress points that can harm communities and the people who call them home. Read more about the transition in this week's O'Neill blog.

And that’s a wrap! Thanks for following along on the EOC Intern’s take on a Social Media Takeover. We hope you guys enjoyed getting to know the extent of what goes on behind the scenes at the Indiana State Fair Emergency Operation’s Center.

During our takeover, the fairgrounds did not experience a lot of severe weather; however we know it’s so much worse not far from here. Part of what we are learning is how we can help communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters just like what so many Hoosiers are experiencing. Our training here at the fairgrounds is helping us learn first hand how to do things just like that.

It’s been a rainy week this year at the Indiana State Fair, however we’ve been ahead of it the entire time.

The Indiana State Fair has meteorologists providing 24/7 site specific coverage. Here in the emergency operations center these meteorologists monitor the weather for the fairgrounds and advise us to the incoming conditions.

With their direction we are able to adjust our operations accordingly to ensure the safety of our fairgoers. With efficient coordination with our public safety partners, we’ve been able to swiftly follow our severe weather protocols throughout the week.

O'Neill students have the opportunity to take on unique internships that put the skills they've learned to work in service to our state, neighbors, and communities. One of those comes from the Indiana State Fair.
This weekend, follow along on our Instagram account as Braden Crynes and Harold Williams show us what it's like to intern with the Fairgrounds and help keep Hoosiers safe during one of the biggest events of the year and all summer long.

O'Neill's Taylor Byrne knew she wanted to make a difference in her community by using the skills and knowledge she gained at O'Neill. But when she contacted the Steuben County Emergency Management Agency in her hometown of Angola, Indiana, an internship didn't exist. She and EMA leadership changed that.
"I had the opportunity to learn, serve, and give back to the community that raised me," she says.
During her internship, Taylor also launched a new initiative of DIY disaster kits, designed to help keep her neighbors safe through emergency preparedness kits, teach local Boy Scouts about emergency response planning, and develop emergency action plans for the Steuben County 4-H Fair.
"Working on these projects helped me realize how passionate I am about preparedness education and finding new ways to help residents become more resilient," she explained. "It reinforced my belief that emergency management is not just about responding when disasters occur. It is about building stronger and better prepared communities before those moments ever happen."
You can read more about how she approached starting the internship and the experiences she had along the way.
