SUSTAINABLE DORMITORY ARCHITECTURE

Each year, the Upper Secondary A-level art students here at the European School engage in an architectural exploration during their schoolyear in S6. In recent years, the focus has been on dormitory design — an investigation into how spatial composition, materiality, and form can foster community and individuality within a shared living environment.

This course challenged students to conceive a dormitory for the Copenhagen area — a structure that balances collective and private spheres, cultivating both social interaction and personal retreat. Central to their designs was an integrated sustainable approach, encompassing ecological materials, spatial efficiency, and environmental harmony.

You can discover the impressive architectural concepts and models developed by this and last year’s S6 students in the canteen for the next week!

Last week, as part of the "ICT and Societies" unit, the S5 class visited the Department of Space Research and Technology at DTU.

The students were welcomed by both Gabriel Strykowski and Bjørnar Dale, who are leading researchers that examine the gravitational measurements of water and ice across the earth in order to monitor climate change.

The students were also able to visit the lab where they could observe a gravimeter (the tools used to measure gravity) and see in real time the data being processed.

It was an informative trip that bridged the connection between scientific research, data collection and programming tools to quantify the effects of climate change.

We are thankful to both Gabriel and Bjørnar for their time and insightful presentations and the Department of Space Research.

P.S. We also had a special visit from a student from last years S7 🙂

🇪🇺 Europe Day at the Upper-Secondary 🇪🇺

On Monday 11 May, we celebrated Europe Day with a timely and thought-provoking theme: social media and the EU. 📱💭

We kicked off the day with inspiring guest speakers from IT University of Copenhagen, Christian Hardmeier and Luca Rossi, who shared their insights on social media, AI, polarisation, and the challenges shaping today’s digital society.
Students then explored the different political groups in the European Parliament, examining their core values, priorities, and visions for Europe.

The day concluded with an engaging role-play debate, where students stepped into the shoes of MEPs to debate key questions such as:
🔹 Should the EU strictly regulate social media algorithms to reduce harmful content?
🔹 Should platforms face stronger penalties for failing to remove illegal or harmful content?
🔹 Should stricter age verification be required to better protect minors online?
A fantastic day filled with critical thinking, debate, and active citizenship. 🌍✨

Check out the Copenhagen Post article about our school 😊

For expat families moving to Copenhagen, zeroing in on a school for their children can quickly feel overwhelming.

Many instinctively lean towards international schools, expecting a language of instruction, teaching style, curriculum, and classroom environment similar to what their children were familiar with back home.

But, as Øzkan Güleryüz points out, international schools in Copenhagen work differently, and no two are alike. Parents, he says, need to do their due diligence and consider factors such as their child's age, the school's curriculum and educational board, language requirements, and expectations around classroom diversity before coming to a decision.

At the link in the comments, the director of the European School Copenhagen details what parents should know about international schooling options in the capital.

🌍✨ A journey to Canada—right in our French nursery class!✨🌍

Last week, our French nursery class had a very special visitor: Mireille, one of our wonderful P0FR parents, took the children on an exciting adventure to Canada 🇨🇦

Mireille shared fascinating stories about Canada’s vast geography and the children learned about the country’s unique wildlife. They even got to taste some delicious Canadian specialties! 🍁

We are so grateful for this enriching experience that brought the world a little closer to our little learners.

🌍📚 Celebrating World Book Day at European School Copenhagen! 📚🌍

Today our Primary students brought their favorite literary characters to life as we celebrated World Book Day.

We were delighted to welcome Sophie Bachet, the brilliant author of The Adventures of Freyja, the Falcon’s Cape. Sophie shared her inspiring journey into writing and how she goes from an initial idea to a completed manuscript. We also celebrated our incredible achievement: entering the Children’s World Records book! Last year, 432 of our students read silently in their own books, all together in the same place for 10 minutes, a true testament to our community’s passion for reading.
