What happens when theology students, philosophers and computer scientists begin turning their academic knowledge into real-world ideas?

Uniavisen’s Malthe Granau recently visited a KU Innovators Pitch Night and spoke with our innovation consultant Benedicte Smith-Sivertsen about entrepreneurship, interdisciplinary collaboration and the courage to fail.

The article follows some of the ideas developed by KU students during the five-week programme, from supporting people through death and grief to helping companies use artificial intelligence responsibly.

It also highlights something that is central to KU Innovators: innovation is not reserved for one particular type of student or one particular academic field.
As Benedicte explains in the article, there are not many places where you will find a theology student discussing business development with a computer science student.

At KU Lighthouse, that meeting across disciplines is part of the point.

Thank you to Malthe Granau and Uniavisen for visiting and sharing a glimpse into the programme 🧚‍♀️

This summer, KU Lighthouse startup UngFrekvens brought RETUNE to Roskilde Festival: an alcohol-free space created for rest, connection and a break from the festival’s high tempo.

At RETUNE, festivalgoers could take a nap, meet new people, play games, join creative activities, boil water for their cup noodles or simply sit quietly for a while.

The response showed that taking a break does not mean stepping away from the festival experience. Sometimes, a calmer space is exactly what makes it possible to stay part of it.

Guests moved the beanbags and deckchairs to create their own small corners. Some talked, read or played. Others slept or spent time by themselves. The space became whatever each person needed it to be.

One guest summed it up in a single word: “A breather.”

We are proud to see UngFrekvens creating new ways for young people to look after themselves and one another, and showing that community does not have to revolve around alcohol ❤️

In just a few weeks, our annual SDG Innovation Challenge kicks off, and we're super excited to see what amazing ideas and solutions will be brought to life.

This year, we are diving into Menstrual Health in Kibera - Africa’s largest informal settlement. Life in Kibera is shaped by complex challenges – and by remarkable strength, creativity, and community resilience.

Our case provider, 100% for the Children, is a Danish NGO working to improve the lives of children and young people in Kibera. Among other things, they work on access to menstrual products for girls and women, community adoptation of biogas, access to clean water and santitation, as well as sexual education for children living with disability. The specific case will be revealed on day one – but expect a task that’s real, relevant, and deeply meaningful.

This is the 12th edition of UCPH’s Global Health innovation challenge, now part of the Sustainability Olympiad – a global network connecting student innovators worldwide. Two teams from the event will be given the opportunity to pitch their solutions to an international jury at the Regional Final of the Sustainability Olympiad August 27-28. Winners qualify for the Global Sustainability Olympiad in Geneva 6-9 November 2026.

A bright update from the KU Lighthouse community ☀️

Spire Light has raised DKK 750,000 in pre-seed funding at a valuation of DKK 25.14 million.

The startup helps voice AI teams collect the speech data they need to train better models. This could be regional accents, multilingual speakers, hard-to-source dialects or speech recorded in everyday environments with background noise.

In other words, Spire Light helps companies capture the real voices and speech patterns that standard datasets often miss.

The funding will support the team as they build a more scalable platform for collecting, storing and delivering custom speech datasets.

Go, go Spire Light!

We're so proud of the Lumina team, who have recently signed an agreement with Q8 Electric to support its fast-charging infrastructure in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg 🌎

Lumina builds an AI-powered platform for EV charging networks. Their technology monitors chargers around the clock, detects issues and helps operations teams respond faster and smarter.

As charging networks grow, keeping them reliable becomes more complex. Lumina helps make that work more scalable, so charging sessions can start smoothly and networks can perform at their best.

Lumina has grown a lot since their time at KU Lighthouse, and now the team has moved into their very own office. We’re cheering from the sidelines - huge congratulations 🥳
