Time to instill a little cognitive dissonance in some socialist leftwing wannabe do-gooders. Buying fair trade coffee at your hipster hangout or school cafeteria does next to nothing when it comes to aiding the poor. It creates rent seeking, misallocation of resources, and the premium hardly reaches the farmer at all anyway. Instead of fair trade, support FREE TRADE. What does that mean? Stop voting God damn corporate socialists into power. These tyrants place crippling tariffs on 3rd world countries, leaving even countries with comparative advantage stuck in the lurch. Next, stop your socialist governments from subsidizing local farmers, this not only hurts you (the consumer) but once again 3rd world countries. What is the result of this awful mess you have voted into place? People die, simple as that. I can already hear you shouting, " But wait I give aid, and therefore I am a caring benevolent pale Western God!". The fact of the matter is, government to government aid is almost a total write off, rather spend that cash buying a kebab from one of those new coloured cousins you hate so much. Even private aid is only partially effective. Rather, support OPEN IMMIGRATION. Last year simply through immigration more than quadruple the amount of money was generated in comparison to all aid transfers. Yip, immigration is the single most effective way to allow a person to better their lives. The best part (now all racists close your ears) is that immigration has a net positive effect on both individuals and the host country! Saying you care about Africans, but then treating them like dogs when they arrive in your country is not caring. Giving money to a number displayed under some skinny African kid with flies on his eyes is not caring. Creating a world where individuals have the rights to seek better lives for themselves, now that's caring. So, the moral of the story is, FREE TRADE not fair trade, OPEN IMMIGRATION not aid. The best part is, no one is going to read this apart from two libertarian buddies- and they already know what's up. If you have made it this far and you are not a libertarian, good on you. Now you are informed, time to stop being fashionably conscientious, and rather become effectively conscientious.
