“In my talk, I will begin by reviewing various academic definitions of culture.
I will then discuss the difficulties that arise in global policy contexts when there are competing (and confusing) understandings of the term 'culture'. This applies not only to the ongoing campaign to include culture in the Post-2030 Agenda but also to the efforts to do justice to the significance of culture in the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
I will conclude by sharing some of my own views on why culture matters in global contexts and what 'cultural sustainability' may mean.”

“Cultural institutions can be important multipliers and models for advancing the transition to sustainability. Although the sector has recognised the priority of sustainability in recent years, it lacks both a specific model of sustainability that could guide this transition and a systematic knowledge of the current state of sustainability actions. I present the ‘Sustainability Star’, developed as a sustainability model as part of collaborative research with cultural institutions. This model forms the basis of a survey of the sustainability practices of over 200 of the world's leading museums, theatres and opera houses. The presentation will address the main findings of the study, including the state of the art in social and environmental sustainability, the differences between museums and the performing arts, and between regions of the world. It identifies important factors influencing the achievement of sustainability and concludes with a discussion of potential next steps to make cultural institutions leaders in the transition to sustainability”.

The network CultureSustain is hosting a series of online talks throughout fall 2024, featuring international researchers discussing various aspects of cultural sustainability. These events are open to all interested participants:

Forskere: Ny reform overser, at museer huser meget mere end fysiske genstande 24/05/2024

Center for dansk museumsforskning: Forskningsbegrebet står alt for svagt i reformrapport 14/01/2024

ICOMS NYE MUSEUMSDEFINITION: DANSKE PERSPEKTIVER 4. DECEMBER 2023

Museen in der DDR, Museologisk Seminar, Dansk Center for Museumsforskning.

Program:
13:00 Velkomst og introduktion.
13.15-14.00: Kristina Kratz-Kessemeier og Nikolaus Bernau: ”Museen in der DDR” – presentation and case studies.

Spanish Art for Texas: The Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University
The Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas is recognized internationally for the quality of its collection of Spanish art and its scholarship. Its mission is to be a center for the study of Spanish art and material culture in the United States. The museum’s formation and focus are the result of the specific taste of its founder, Algur H. Meadows, a Texas oilman who spent considerable time in Spain. Although part of SMU’s school of art, The Meadows Foundation continues to be the museum’s primary supporter thanks to large grants to support acquisitions, exhibitions, and educational programming. The Meadows Museum therefore serves not only the university community of students, faculty, and staff, but engages Dallas, North Texas, and international audiences as well. It plays a key role in the promotion of Spanish art and culture in the US. The recent foundation of the Custard Institute for Spanish Art and Culture under the auspices of the museum promises to expand the academic and research role of the institution. This lecture will address and problematize some of the unique qualities and goals of the Meadows Museum, the development of its collection of Spanish art, and the ways in which it serves its diverse communities.

Dr. Amanda W. Dotseth is the Interim Director and Curator at the Meadows Museum, Southern Methodist University, where she also served as Assistant Curator between 2006 and 2009. She completed her Ph.D. on Romanesque Architecture at the Courtauld Institute of Art in 2015, and has held fellowships with Fulbright and Mellon Foundations as well as at the Spanish National Research Council. Her research focuses on medieval Spain but has addressed a wide range of topics, including Baroque painting, medieval treasuries, and collecting history. She has contributed to a number of exhibitions, including Fernando Gallego and His Workshop: The Altarpiece from Ciudad Rodrigo, El Greco, Goya, and a Taste for Spain: Highlights from the Bowes Museum, Canvas & Silk: Historic Fashion from Madrid’s Museo del Traje, Murillo: Picturing the Prodigal Son, and Dalí/Vermeer: A Dialogue.
