Our PhD student Yousef Mohammadi has published a paper titled "Validity and reliability of self-reported and neural measures of listening effort" as a preprint.

This paper addressed the listening effort phenomenon, which is a common complaint among hearing-impaired individuals. The work investigated the reliability of behavioral and neural measures of listening effort and found that neural measures were not as reliable as behavioral measures.

Validity and reliability of self-reported and neural measures of listening effort Listening effort can be defined as a measure of cognitive resources used by listeners to perform a listening task. Several methods have been proposed to assess listening effort, but the reliability of these methods has not yet been thoroughly establis

Diagnostic Accuracy of Perception Threshold Tracking in the Detection of Small Fiber Damage in Type 1 Diabetes - Johan Røikjer, Suganthiya Santhiapillai Croosu, Benn Falch Sejergaard, Tine Maria Hansen, Jens Brøndum Frøkjær, Chris Bath... 08/03/2023

We resently published this paper showing very good agreement between PTT and CCM https://buff.ly/41Ts5gH , however, Gylfadottir et al. has just published this paper https://buff.ly/3kT1MGS shwoing that CCM is not great for diagnosing DPN...

Diagnostic Accuracy of Perception Threshold Tracking in the Detection of Small Fiber Damage in Type 1 Diabetes - Johan Røikjer, Suganthiya Santhiapillai Croosu, Benn Falch Sejergaard, Tine Maria Hansen, Jens Brøndum Frøkjær, Chris Bath... Aim: An objective assessment of small nerve fibers is key to the early detection of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). This study investigates the diagnostic...

The co-existence of sensory and autonomic neuropathy in type 1 diabetes with and without pain - Acta Diabetologica 07/03/2023

Exciting news! Our latest paper "The co-existence of sensory and autonomic neuropathy in type 1 diabetes with and without pain" is now available in Acta Diabetologica. This study investigated the co-existence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (PDPN), and cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) in 80 participants, and established a model to predict CAN based on peripheral measurements. The findings suggest that CAN predominantly co-exists with concomitant DPN. Check out the article to learn more about our prediction model and its potential implications for the management of diabetes.

The co-existence of sensory and autonomic neuropathy in type 1 diabetes with and without pain - Acta Diabetologica Aims To investigate the co-existence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (PDPN), and cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) and to establish a model to predict CAN based on peripheral measurements. Methods Eighty participants (20 type 1 diabetes (T1DM) + P...

This is a very interesting paper where Niimi et al investigates and models selective stimulation of cutaneous nerves. Well done!

Selective stimulation of nociceptive small fibers during intraepidermal electrical stimulation: Experiment and computational analysis Electrical stimulation of skin nociceptors is gaining attention in pain research and peripheral neuropathy diagnosis. However, the optimal parameters for selective stimulation are still difficult to determine because they require simultaneous characterization of the electrical response of small fibe...

Alterations in Functional Connectivity of Thalamus and Primary Somatosensory Cortex in Painful and Painless Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy 28/02/2023

Yet another publication frim the MEDON study.

Resting-state connectivity changes of thalamus and the postcentral gyrus (areas relevant for pain) were related to the neuropathy phenotypes in individuals with type-1 diabetes.

Alterations in Functional Connectivity of Thalamus and Primary Somatosensory Cortex in Painful and Painless Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy OBJECTIVE. In this study we aimed to investigate the functional connectivity of brain regions involved in sensory processing in diabetes with and without painfu

Persistent nociceptor hyperactivity as a painful evolutionary adaptation 03/02/2023

Chronic pain as an evolutionary advantage? This is a very interersting paper on peripheral nerve fiber hyperactivity.

Persistent nociceptor hyperactivity as a painful evolutionary adaptation In evolutionary medicine, it is recognized that some disease symptoms commonly assumed to be maladaptive, such as diarrhea and fever, are in fact evolutionary adaptations promoting survival and reproductive success – notwithstanding the distress they cause [1]. One malady almost universally consid...
