Last week, a special issue of the interdisciplinary e-journal DIEGESIS on the project was published. The issue titled "European Narratives on Migration: Concepts and Case Studies" was co-edited by Marco Caracciolo, Carolin Gebauer, and Roy Sommer, and assembles contributions by project members Simona Adinolfi, Birgit Bahtić-Kunrath, M. Moustapha Diallo, Ida Fábián, Mariam Muwanga, and the guest editors. The articles present findings of what our team has been working on for the last three years.

DIEGESIS DIEGESIS. Interdisciplinary E-Journal for Narrative-Research

Last month, the project travelled to Accra for its annual conference with partners from the Center for Migration at the University of Ghana. Roy Sommer, scientific coordinator of the project, opened a dialogue on German-Ghanaian relations and presented new research on European migration debates.

At the beginning of this month, members of the Wuppertal team of OPPORTUNITIES travelled to Brussels to participate in a workshop with (future) journalists to discuss how to create a level telling field on migration as well as how to include migrant voices in public debates on migration and integration.

Today was the first day of yet another consortium meeting of the project. Our partners, including members of the Wuppertal team, met online to discuss the dynamics of in the European public sphere. Most of the papers that were presented will be published in a special issue on migration narratives of DIEGESIS, the interdisciplinary ejournal for narrative research published at the Center for Narrative Research at Bergische Universität Wuppertal. We also addressed the question of how to create a new narrative of successful integration.

It was a very productive day and we look forward to continuing our discussion tomorrow!

Summer Course in Narrative Studies 2023, organized by the University of Aarhus at the Sandbjerg Estate in Sønderborg, Southern Denmark: a great opportunity to present some key concepts of the project to an international audience of narrative theorists from a wide range of disciplines (legal studies, business studies, and healthcare, to name just a few). Roy Sommer’s keynote introduced the level telling field as a new programmatic and analytical category which allows us to rethink communication in the public sphere and to move beyond toxic debates. An additional plus: the wonderfully idyllic venue (see the pictures below).

Today, our team member Dr. Carolin Gebauer had the pleasure and honour to present the project in the seminar "Representing Migration in Europe: Crisis, Creativity, and Culture", organized by Prof. Paul Long at Monash University Prato Center. It was a great discussion and we are very grateful for having been given this wonderful opportunity to present our research to colleagues and students working on questions related to migration narratives and migrant voices in the public sphere.

Our team member Dr. Carolin Gebauer spent the last three months at one of our partner universities, UGent, to closely collaborate with one of our work package leaders, Prof. Dr. Marco Caracciolo, and his team. During her stay in Belgium, Dr. Gebauer and Prof. Caracciolo mainly prepared a special issue on narratives on/of migration which will be published with the interdisciplinary ejournal DIEGESIS later this year. They also co-organized, together with Simona Adinolfi, a two-day workshop on narratives of mobility in the Anthropocene.

The pictures show that Dr. Gebauer must have a had wonderful time in lovely Belgium. However, we are very glad to have her back here in Wuppertal. 🙂🙃

Last week, Dr. Carolin Gebauer and Simona Adinolfi, members of the teams from Wuppertal and Ghent, travelled to Finland in order to present findings of our research on the narrative dynamics of migration at this year's Narrative Matters Conference. Organized by Tampere University, the conference offered a wonderful opportunity for humanities scholars and social scientists to discuss the social, political, and cultural functions of instrumental narratives as well as the significance of the recent storytelling boom.
