Das BFI ist Ergebnis einer jahrelangen konsequenten Forschungsarbeit und künstlerisch-gestalterischen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Medium Film an der Bauhaus-Universität. An der Spitze des Instituts steht ein Direktorium, das von den Leitern der Departments gebildet wird. Bei den Gründungsprofessoren handelt es sich um Prof. Wolfgang Kissel (Filmgestaltung). Prof. Wolfgang Kissel hat die Funktion des geschäftsführenden Direktors des BFI übernommen.
