Schuberts Winterreise mit Orgel und künstlerischen Interventionen

„Fremd bin ich eingezogen, fremd zieh’ ich wieder aus.“ So beginnt einer der bekanntesten Liederzyklen überhaupt: Franz Schuberts „Winterreise“. Ein Wanderer irrt durch eisige Kälte - ziellos, von der Liebe im Stich gelassen. Nur der Gesang ist ihm geblieben. Die Lieder reflektieren seine innerste Gefühlslage, kreisen um seine zerbrochene Beziehung, um seine Hoffnung, um Resignation. Dazwischen erklingen kurze Interventionen, die Schuberts Meisterwerk sinnfällig ergänzen und kommentieren: Volkslieder, Musik des spanischen Gitarristen und Komponisten Eduardo Sainz de la Maza sowie Lyrik von Daniel Arkadij Gerzenberg.

Mit Julian Prégardien (Tenor), Martin Sturm (Orgel), Liedstadt-Artists Anne Haasch (Gitarre) und Daniel Arkadij Gerzenberg (Lyrik) sowie Maria Shuliakovskaia (Sopran).

Schubert’s “Winterreise” with organ and artistic interventions

“A stranger I came, a stranger I depart.” Thus begins one of the most famous song cycles of all time: Franz Schubert’s “Winterreise”. A wanderer roams through the icy cold - aimlessly, abandoned by love. Only his singing remains. The songs reflect his innermost feelings, revolving around his broken relationship, his hope and his resignation. In between, there are brief interludes that aptly complement and comment on Schubert’s masterpiece: folk songs, music by the Spanish guitarist and composer Eduardo Sainz de la Maza, and poetry by Daniel Arkadij Gerzenberg.

Featuring Julian Prégardien (tenor), Martin Sturm (organ), Liedstadt artists Anne Haasch (guitar) and Daniel Arkadij Gerzenberg (poetry), and Maria Shuliakovskaia (soprano).

Diese Woche hatten wir die wunderbare Möglichkeit, unseren regulären Unterricht an diesen beiden tollen Instrumenten zu halten. Für barockes Repertoire fuhren wir nach Waltershausen zur Trost-Orgel. Sie ist perfekt für die barocken thüringischen Klangfarben und das mechanische Spielgefühl geeignet. (Wenn man hier zum ersten Mal mit allen drei Koppeln spielt, fühlt es sich hinterher so an, als hätte man einen Halbmarathon absolviert…)

Für alle, die momentan etwas Romantisches spielen, ging es nach Apolda zur Sauer-Orgel. Hier ist das komplette Gegenteil der Fall: Mit der pneumatischen Traktur kann man mit nur ganz leichten Bewegungen die ganze Kirche mit Klang füllen.

Die Orgeln geben einem praktisch vor, wie die Werke gespielt werden sollen - die beste Art zu lernen!

This week we had the wonderful opportunity to hold our regular lessons on these two fantastic instruments. For the Baroque repertoire, we travelled to Waltershausen to play the Trost organ. It is perfectly suited to the Baroque Thuringian timbres and the mechanical feel of the action. (When you play all three stops here for the first time, it feels afterwards as though you’ve just run a half-marathon…)

For anyone currently playing something romantic, we headed to Apolda to see the Sauer organ. Here, it’s the complete opposite: thanks to the pneumatic action, you can fill the whole church with sound using just the slightest of movements.

The organs practically dictate how the pieces should be played - the best way to learn!

Morgen bildet das Konzert den krönenden Abschluss seines Improvisationsstudiums bei Martin Sturm in Weimar. In der historischen Predigerkirche in Erfurt wird Musik klingen, die genau in diesem Moment entsteht. Ein Aufeinandertreffen von Tradition und Spontaneität. Es wird ein Fest! 🎶

From rich reverberation to dry acoustics - every church is a sound space in its own right and is, in a sense, part of the organ itself.

Above all, pieces by local composers only sound truly authentic when played on the original instruments.

Why does an organ sound the way it does? The shape of the pipes determines the overtones – and thus our entire style of voicing.

History shapes craftsmanship. We have learnt how local traditions, history and even the local dialect influence the sound of an organ.

We have compared instruments from different eras. What are the differences? And what do they still have in common?

A cultural experience isn’t complete without traditional food!
