Day 25. I made it.
For the past 25 days I’ve been painting every single day. Something I haven’t done in almost 3 years.
I joined The Creative Awakening Challenge by Nicholas Wilton — a free 25-day program built around a simple practice: a sketchbook, 20 minutes a day, painting what you like or how you feel.
For me it became about painting how I want to feel. And about finding my artistic style — something I’m still searching for.
I started painting in 2018, in my thirties. Late, maybe. But I loved it so much. When our daughter arrived 2,5 years ago, the evenings disappeared, and painting slowly left my life.
I’m also an art therapist. I work in a hospital with patients in palliative medicine — people who are very sick, many of whom can no longer move freely.
My goal is simple: I want them to have fun. To do something joyful and different from just lying in bed.
When they pick up a brush, something happens. They get absorbed. The fear and the anxiety quiet down for a while. They find a kind of autonomy — and often surprise themselves completely. They almost always say afterwards: I didn’t know I could do this.
I know what creativity does for people. And yet I had let it go in my own life.
I live in Germany, far from home and the family we grew up with. I’m a full time mom right now, and I do my palliative work only on weekends, when my husband can be with our daughter. In a life like this — full and tender and a little isolated — these 20 minutes every evening at the dining room table were something I hadn’t realized I needed so much.
I came back to painting. I was playing, trying new things, exploring. And somewhere in that playing I remembered something I had forgotten — I love painting flowers.
Still finding my style. Still figuring out what my art wants to be. But painting again, as a mother, far from home.
And that feels like enough. 🎨
