Just a few days to go until kick-off at Euro 2024. But can the home European Championship strengthen the " team spirit" in Germany? What about UEFA's image? And how important is in to Germans?

Germans are not expecting a second " ": "At 29%, less than a third of respondents believe that the European Football Championship 2024 will strengthen the sense of a common national identity in Germany," says study director Prof. Dr. Voeth.

"The votes are even more restrained when it comes to the impact of the tournament on social cohesion in society or whether the European Football Championship 2024 will have a positive impact on the economy in their region. Only 27% of Germans agree in each case," adds Stjepan Jurisic.

Compared to the controversial 2022 in Qatar, however, around two-thirds of those surveyed expect Chancellor Olaf Scholz to make an appearance at the opening match and the in the .

In addition, the UEFA continues struggling with an image problem: "Over 40 percent give it poor to very poor marks. Just one in five have a positive image of the European soccer governing body," says Tom Huhnke.

One topic is particularly important to Germans when it comes to the European Football Championship: more than 60 percent said that the major event should be compatible with sustainability issues such as and .

⚽Video 📽️ series and Survey on the (3/4): "Public, private or no viewing at all? This is how Germany is watching!"

Too many people and fear of terror? Tickets too expensive? Private instead of ? The ⚽ 2024 kicks off on 👉 June 14 in just a few days. But: Where does 🇩🇪 want to watch the EM matches? In the stadium or on the sofa at home?

Tom Huhnke and Stjepan Jurisic from the & Business Development department at the University of Hohenheim under the direction of Prof. Dr. Markus Voeth .unihohenheim examined these and other questions in a Germany-wide survey!

The result: over 70 percent want to watch the games at home this year. One of the main reasons for this are the European Championship tickets, which most people find too expensive.

"Just under a third of all those interested in the European Championships would like to watch the games at public viewings," says study director Prof. Dr. Voeth. However, many people avoid public events due to fear of terrorism and "too many people".

"Despite this, almost a third do not want to miss out on the good atmosphere and the sense of community and want to watch the games at private public viewings with friends or acquaintances," says co-head of the study Stjepan Jurisic.

"When it comes to following the European Championships during working hours, employers are much more tolerant compared to previous tournaments," says co-head of the study Tom Huhnke. "On average, respondents want to use around 24 minutes of their working day for European Championship topics."

⚽Video 📽️ series and Survey on the at home: "The away jersey: Pretty in pink or pink embarrassment?" (2/4)

It polarizes, even if it is sold out almost everywhere before the start of the ⚽ European 2024: The pink away of the German national team. This is also reflected in the conducted by the & Business Development department at the University of Hohenheim under the direction of Prof. Dr. Markus Voeth .unihohenheim

"Around a third of those surveyed are not convinced by the pink away jersey. However, almost as many think it is good or very good," explains Stjepan Jurisic, who was also involved in the survey and is a research associate in the department.

At the top of the fans' favorites, however: The classic white jersey. As many as one in five want to buy one.

"The classic white jersey is still the most popular," says co-head of the study and research associate in the department Tom Huhnke: "This year, 65 percent of respondents like it well to very well. This makes it the second most popular home jersey of the last 20 years."

The willingness to pay has also increased: Fans are willing to spend between 21 and 50 euros on for the upcoming Euro 2024. "Compared to the in Qatar, the consumer mood of Germans has increased. Overall, they are willing to spend more money on fan merchandise for the 🇩🇪 ," says study director Prof. Dr. Voeth. "Although around 58% of respondents in our still don't want to buy any fan merchandise at all, this figure was almost 73% at the 2022 World Cup."

It kicks off on June 14: the Soccer ⚽ Championship 2024. But what do the Germans actually think about the at home? Are they eagerly awaiting the games? Or is there a general lack of interest?

Tom Huhnke and Stjepan Jurisic from the & Business Development department, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Markus Voeth, investigated these and other questions. In a representative , they examined expectations for the European Championships.

"Confidence in the German national team 🇩🇪 is unbroken," says Prof. Voeth. "As in previous studies, the team is a hot contender for the European Championship title for the German population 🏆."

Around 30% of Germans see their national team ⛹️ as the favorites, closely followed by France 🇫🇷 with around 27%. By contrast, Germans give title holder Italy 🇮🇹 little chance of winning the 2024 European Championship title.

"However, despite the recent good results, around half of those surveyed also believe that the German national team will be eliminated before the semi-finals," adds co-head of the study Stjepan Jurisic. "For example, 10% fewer believe that the DFB team will reach the final of Euro 2024 than at the in Qatar."

Overall, German interest is significantly higher than for the 2022 World Cup: "After the controversial World Cup in Qatar, Germans are much more positive about the European Championship in their own country," says co-author Tom Huhnke. "35% of respondents want to watch as many games as possible, regardless of the team. In Qatar, only 20% wanted to do so."

A lot of good will, hardly any coordination: it's difficult to bring agriculture and biodiversity together in a meaningful way.

"At the moment, every farm creates its bee pastures, wildlife corridors and areas for nesting sites somewhere without coordinating with its neighbors," says Thomas Berger, professor at Hohenheim. "This fragments the environmental measures and limits their effectiveness."
