Skilled storytelling for vertical micro-dramas is the key to mastering a trend that is now reaching the German-speaking film industry and marketing sector.

What few people know: I have been working with vertical storytelling and native smartphone content formats since 2012 — at a time when this approach was still widely dismissed.

Unlike classical audiovisual formats, vertical micro-dramas follow no fixed rules. They require a deep understanding of mobile dramaturgy, audiovisual grammar, and emotional compression.

Storytellers and media professionals who truly master this specific language remain rare in the German-speaking market.

At the same time, the form and its genres offer substantial potential — for both fictional and factual narratives, as well as for formal experimentation.

Vertical micro-dramas demand condensed storytelling while enabling a flexible content manufactory, with fluid narratives that can be developed further across media.

They reach large and diverse audiences — first and foremost on the smartphone: across generations and social milieus, many of them active and fully engaged in everyday life.

Their vertical, pointed dramaturgy enables “binge-biting”: one or several short episodes can be consumed anytime, anywhere, directly on the smartphone — ideally with headphones.

Every second counts.

Close-ups and emotionally charged moments draw viewers in. Music and sound effects create intimacy, set rhythm, and introduce precise narrative ruptures.

In our first TOP:Talente e.V. workshop on vertical micro-dramas, held under my direction, we consolidated current knowledge, explored genres, developed stories, and produced initial clips — ranging from documentary cartoons and fictional dramas to horror scenarios and journalistic reportages.

I welcome conversations with producers, editorial teams, and recruiters who are interested in advancing vertical micro-dramas in the German-speaking market.

What New York’s new mayor’s victory speech teaches about leadership, credibility, and campaign strategy – and why Europe is now talking about a “Mamdani Moment”.

I recommend everyone listen to Zohran Mamdani’s 23-minute victory speech “Turn the Volume Up!”, delivered on the night of November 4, 2025, when he was elected Mayor of New York. (Link in comments)

Five principles stand out like through a magnifying glass—principles that can make political communication and campaigning succeed even against all odds:

1. Focus on one central concept.
Mamdani builds everything around affordability—and makes structural change visible on a broad scale. The vision behind it: a democratic, contemporary interpretation of historical materialism, rooted in the cultural openness of the Harlem Renaissance, and in civil rights movements.

2. Address real pain points with clear language.
problems directly. Use slogans people can immediately relate to.

3. Be a movement, not a party.
Unite rather than divide. Build and deepen alliances across social groups and interests.

4. Lead with action.
Credibility comes from deeds—practical solutions before and during the campaign, visibility on the ground, and genuine care. That’s how trust is earned. It’s what effective politics looks like, starting at the local level.

5. Connect belonging with the future.
Acknowledge people’s need for inclusion and perspective—and tie both to a tangible plan of action.

This communicative, action-driven mix travels well. Its effectiveness can be seen in other parts of the world too—for example, in the unlikely electoral victories of India’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP, Common Man’s Party) since 2015, with their focus on „corruption“.

Here in Germany, some already speak of a “Mamdani moment”—the moment when people of different generations and backgrounds join forces in a democratic push to replace autocratic MAGA-style politics with a social market economy.

Caution is still warranted: we operate in a political ecosystem where ideas drown in bureaucracy, conviction turns into tactics, and lost elections end in appointments—where endurance is rewarded more often than courage.

Real change still depends on one thing above all: credible, courageous leadership—people who fight for the cause, not for themselves.

Vertical Micro Dramas: How Smartphone Storytelling Is Evolving

For over 15 years, we have been exploring high-quality storytelling for smartphone screens together with our professional network in Germany, India and the United States:

Stories produced with a mix of mobile cameras and microphones – from smartphones and DSLR cameras to drones – for audiences viewing on smartphone screens with headphones, employing a distinctive audiovisual grammar.

The market for vertical content has grown continuously since the emergence of distribution platforms for vertical formats.

A challenge for journalistic and creative storytellers:
conveying in-depth content and complex research through micro-stories with their brief sequences in 9:16 format.

Since 2019, vertical micro dramas have also emerged:
narrative series with episodes ranging from one-and-a-half to ten minutes.

A billion-dollar market, currently dominated by Chinese and South Korean streaming platforms that now offer international adaptations.

Unlike traditional formats, vertical micro dramas follow no fixed rules.

Their dramaturgy enables "binge-biting" – one or several short episodes can be consumed on smartphones anywhere, at any moment.

Production methods and genres offer tremendous potential.

Micro dramas reach people who are active, engaged in life, and belong to diverse socio-demographic groups.

Every second counts.

Close-ups and emotional moments captivate viewers. Music and sound effects create intimacy, establish rhythm, and mark transitions.

In German-speaking regions, there have been scarcely any noteworthy productions to date.

This is precisely where Elisabeth's current TOP:Talente e.V. workshop begins: Writers, directors, and producers are developing new material and innovative genres for vertical micro dramas in the German-speaking market.

We're deeply curious about the continued development of content and expansion of genres for more substantive narratives – and grateful for the openness to innovation that makes collaboration with Top:Talente so exceptional.

As a side note:

German politician Anna-Lena Baerbock's team is currently transposing this genre into political communication — broadcasting from New York. While these are early, unrefined attempts, the genre innovation for relevant content is particularly significant.

And we know that people in Germany desire more emotionally resonant political communication.

The dramaturgy of micro dramas aligns with this – and with the media needs of many people engaged in everyday life.

The British Full Fact team consists of independent fact-checkers and experienced journalists who expose and combat the damage caused by false information—even in real-time.

Full Fact integrates AI tools with human expertise to ensure accurate and responsible statements in public discourse.

Because false information ruins lives, destroys trust in public discourse, and damages democracy.

It is facts and accurate information that enable reliable decisions, whether for individuals, politicians, or businesses.

That's why facts and information must be verified and corrected in real-time, even during talk shows and interviews.

In the attached slides, you'll find the hybrid workflow that Full Fact has developed as a Live Fact Radar in eight steps, where AI applications specifically support human editors.

This systematic fact radar enables newsrooms to:
capture vast amounts of content,
continuously identify potentially harmful claims,
quickly verify new information,
provide precise context to information in real-time during broadcasts.

A clear recommendation to establish such a fact radar as standard practice in public service and independent newsrooms.

Creative writers, editors, producers - explore with us how to safely use generative AI as a sparring partner

Marie Elisabeth Müller together with TOP:Talente - Academy for FIlm and TV dramaturgy - in 2023 conducts a series of remote generative AI Masterclasses as well as a hybrid writers room.

We’re going to experiment with new tools and workflows and produce genuine formats. Therefore we apply a mix of methods including generative AI.

Working language is English (and German).

After all, AI methods are here to stay, as a quick look at IBM's "Global AI Adoption Index" alone shows.

Numerous companies around the world are already successfully using AI-based sensors, data analytics and processes, such as for their sustainability strategy, marketing emails, message-based texts, project documentation and much more.

So, it's advisable and sensible to get involved with this now and not wait to find out how bots and AI tools can successfully and responsibly benefit me for my own goals without doing harm.

We assume, for communicators, editors, marketers, creatives, writers and producers, it's helpful to define "quantifiable tasks" that AI systems perform faster and more effectively.

Still you are going to double-check, edit, further process or prepare before publishing.

Tasks such as data selection, everyday storytelling, utility texts, and preliminary work such as brainstorming, and many more.

Telling stories with viral potential

In conversations with our readers, the very practical value of our insights and tools is confirmed again and again. After all, they are also based on our concrete experiences and innovative concepts, which we have continued to develop.

Many respond particularly positively to one aspect that is radically transforming storytelling on the social web: Brevity doesn't have to be banal. We can tell profound content very briefly, too:

Short micro-stories work when they break beats out of a much longer story and tell it in an empathetic and compressed way using multimedia.

Then micro-stories activate visual associations and emotional memories in users that are stored in the collective memory in narratives and archetypes.

Therefore, here is a very recent recommendation. For those who are looking for inspiration, want to treat themselves to an update in storytelling, or want to give away a practical manual:

Rheinwerk Verlag GmbH in Bonn is the top publisher for new media, IT, design in the DACH region. It is now offering selected e-books at irresistible prices for a short time. Our book has been selected for this. Take a look, you might find what you are looking for here:

We wrote our book "Social Media Storytelling" because Devadas Rajaram and I wish to share a significant part of our practice-relevant knowledge and offer a radical new toolbox for storytelling in the social web.

It’s available:
1. Either in German @ Rheinwerk Bonn or in English @ Routledge London.
2. Either as hard copy or as paperback.
3. And also as eBook for download.
