: As a new student in Germany, I once called my health insurance company to ask if some of the monthly deductions from my student-job payslip could be refunded, since I hadn’t been to the hospital for months ... 😂
I was so broke that even a small refund would have gone a long way in helping me through that period.
The lady on the phone was calm and professional. She explained that, unfortunately, health insurance contributions are not refundable simply because you haven't used the healthcare system. However, she told me that under certain conditions, pension contributions could potentially be refunded if I eventually decided to settle outside Germany.
I was disappointed! 😅
Yes, I was looking at the situation from the perspective of “I paid, but I didn't use the service.” I was looking at a system through the eyes of an individual, while the system was designed to serve the collective.
The truth is that a functioning system cannot be built around individual usage. Thousands of people may pay into a health insurance system without getting sick that year. Others may need expensive treatment, medication, surgery or long-term care. The system works because people contribute according to established rules, and the resources are pooled to provide security when people need it.
Systems succeed when people understand that not every contribution is designed to produce an immediate personal return.
Strong countries are built by systems that allow millions of individuals to work, contribute, trust, plan and prosper within predictable rules.
I hope you learned something today!
Good morning & have a lovely day ahead fans 🙏
