European XFEL An international research facility in the Hamburg area of Germany, the European XFEL generates extremely intense laserlike X-rays for research.

Smaller, faster, more intense: The European XFEL, an X-ray laser research facility in the Hamburg metropolitan area, will open up areas of research that were previously inaccessible. Using the X-ray laser flashes of the European XFEL, scientists will be able to map the atomic details of viruses, decipher the molecular composition of cells, take three-dimensional images of the nanoworld, film chemical reactions, and study processes such as those occurring deep inside planets.

European XFEL will be at the heart of a joint fusion research and development effort in Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein, which received funding from the German federal government (Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt) today. The collaboration will serve as the centre of German laser fusion research and development.
It is part of a hub for laser fusion, funded by the Hightech Agenda Germany programme, led by Marvel Fusion and Focused Energy, and with an additional location in Biblis/Hesse.

🏳️‍🌈European XFEL takes a stand for diversity
Research institution makes a visible statement in support of diversity, solidarity and open-mindedness
 
🏳️‍🌈As part of Hamburg Pride Week, taking place from 24 July to 3 August 2026, European XFEL is joining the “Hamburg zeigt Flagge” initiative alongside more than 400 other organisations displaying rainbow flags in this period. In doing so, the research institution is reaffirming its strong commitment to diversity as a key element of an inclusive working environment.

🏳️‍🌈For the first time this year, a group of European XFEL employees will also jointly visit the Christopher Street Day parade on 1 August in the Hamburg city centre. This year’s event is held under the motto: “Queer solidarity. Taking a stand – for a future without fear!”

🏳️‍🌈Managing Director Nicole Elleuche says: “Our support of Pride Week reflects our conviction that diversity strengthens research, collaboration and the way we live together as a society. We want to take a clear stand and help shape a future in which people can live free from fear and discrimination.”

Ryszard Sobierajski takes over as Chairman of the European XFEL Council, Karel Saksl becomes Vice Chairman

European XFEL thanks outgoing Chairman Federico Boscherini

As of 1 July 2026, former Vice Chairman Ryszard Sobierajski is the new Chairman of the European XFEL Council, following Federico Boscherini, whose second and final two-year term as Council Chairman ended as scheduled. Slovak Council delegate Karel Saksl has taken office as the new Vice Chairman of the international research organisation.

Thomas Feurer, Chairman of the Management Board of European XFEL, congratulated both Sobierajski and Saksl, and thanked the outgoing Chairman Federico Boscherini for his dedication and contributions.

Students’ Day offers insights into projects

More structure, more exchange, even better results: European XFEL is strengthening PhD training. As is tradition, Students’ Day 2026 brought together PhD students and researchers from European XFEL.  
Through its Students’ Days, European XFEL enables PhD students to prepare thoroughly and intensively for a in .
 
Sakura Pascarelli, Scientific Director at European XFEL and responsible for doctoral training at the international research organisation, announced that training would be further intensified. In future, European XFEL aims to prepare graduates even better for a scientific career through its own doctoral school. Among other measures, new administrative capacities have been created for this purpose.

The Students’ Day 2026 programme concluded with a poster session, during which numerous participants presented their experiments and findings. The annual prize for the best posters was won by Amna Majid and Moritz Grunwald-Delitz for their graphical overviews of their topics. Majid presented the topic “Towards predictive maintenance of large scientific facilities using machine learning ”. Grunwald-Delitz presented: “Temporal evolution of x-ray fluorescence of highly charged xenon ions under FEL irradiation”.

New milestone in : Successful tests confirm outstanding performance of coils

Researchers at have reached an important milestone in developing a new generation of X-ray light sources. A set of superconducting electromagnets, produced by Bilfinger Nuclear, have proven their excellent performance, paving the way for the use of the design in future superconducting undulators. These devices will cause accelerated electrons to radiate much more effectively than current state-of-the-art technology allows. European XFEL aims to become the world’s first X-ray free-electron laser to use superconducting undulators. These undulators will unlock new research in fields such as materials science, chemistry, biology and high-energy-density science by providing X-ray pulses with significantly shorter wavelengths than have been possible at XFELs to date. 

The magnetic field measurements were conducted using the test stand SUNDAE1, developed for this purpose and located at DESY in Hamburg.

“This is a major step forward for our superconducting undulator programme,” says Sara Casalbuoni, leader of the Undulator Group. “The successful measurements show that the technology works as intended and bring us closer to using superconducting undulators at European XFEL.”

Staff contribute to the communal buffet with dishes from their home countries
 
is like a varied buffet. To celebrate German Diversity Day 2026 ( ), staff from XFEL came together to and . The highlight: the buffet consisted of traditional dishes that the staff had brought along. This meant that this year’s DDT motto, ‘When diversity wins, we all win’, could literally be tasted. As a visible symbol, the flag was also raised that morning.
 
Six hundred people from more than 60 countries work on the world’s largest X-ray research laser – not counting the rotating international research teams who travel from all over the world to the Campus to conduct experiments.
 
For the research facility, this diversity of talents and cultures is a vital foundation for successfully collaborating on solutions to the challenges of the future. This is another reason why European XFEL is committed to a diverse working environment, as demonstrated most recently at the Schenefeld Festival of Democracy on 8 May. Only in this way can staff develop their talents to the fullest.
