Arrival & Day 1 – Sustainability Camp Denmark
We began our journey in Rostock, Germany. After a quick bus ride, we arrived at the dock and took the ferry to Denmark. ⛴ 🇩🇪 🇩🇰
The journey over the Baltic Sea was exciting for many, but others could not handle the heavy waves and rocking of the ferry well. 🌊
Once we arrived, we hopped back on the bus to drive to Nykøbing Falster.
The first day of the Camp started with a warm welcome at the UCE, Merkurs Plads. 🏫
After that, we heard a talk about the Green Tripartite Agreement for the restoration of wetlands, biodiversity and climate adaptation. 🌱
Next on the agenda was a Photo-Safari in Nykøbing Falster with a local guide. We split up into groups, and each group got to see a different exciting part of the city. 📷
We then met back up at the UCE and took a transfer to the Femern Belt Tunnel Exhibition and Construction side, where we met everyone and had lunch for the day. 🍽️
After lunch, we split up into groups again and went, each group at a time, to three different locations.
The first location was the Femern Belt Exhibition. There we got a chance to learn about the construction of the tunnel. 🏗️
The tunnel is a sustainability project to connect Denmark and Germany that reduces CO2 by saving around 160km of detour for trains passing through Denmark. 🚅
The second location was the new land built at Rødby. Denmark built 300,000 square metres of new land. Located at Rødbyhavn, the new land has been created using material excavated from the trench for the Fehmarn Belt tunnel.
The third location was The Arrow. 🏹
It is a landmark viewing platform shaped like an arrow that points to Germany. It is 217m long, matching the length of a single segment of one of the tunnel segments. 🔭
For dinner, we met up at the UCE, Kringelborg, where we also reflected on the day’s activities. 🥙
