🇺🇸 Reinforcement and punishment
It seems that, the more that trainers keep trying to explain the ethological meaning of these two words, the more that people keep misunderstanding them. I still don't know if it’s because we, the trainers, have such a problem explaining this or because as a student I also know that it’s easy to fall in the trap of understanding what I want to understand instead of what is really being taught.
In ethology Reinforcement means that the behavior is likely to increase as a response and punishment means that the behavior is likely to decrease as a response. Also the terms „positive“ and „negative“ are not used in their basic sense. Positive means that something is being added and negative means that something is being removed. So you have 4 tools you can use: positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement as well as positive punishment and negative punishment.
Those previous terms are some of the most misused I’ve seen in horse training and sadly more and more people use them to scare others about the techniques they are using to train their horses especially if they know the counterpart knows nothing about what the terms really mean.
When we say “positive“ means something is being added, we don’t mean necessarily something good. Also when we say “punishment” it doesn’t mean that the horse is being hit.
I know it can get confusing so here is some help:
If you for example have the term “positive punishment” you first take the first word and deduce that an impulse will be added (positive means adding) and then the second word “punishment” which means that the behavior will happen less because of it.
Are you confused?
Good... that means you are normal. 😅
Here is a bit more help with what this all means:
Positive reinforcement = something is being added that will make the behavior more likely to happen again (example: my horse shakes his head ➜ I give him a cookie and thereby he shakes his head more often)
Positive punishment = something is being added that will make the behavior less likely to happen again (example: my horse tries to bite me ➜ I yell at him and thereby he bites me less often)
Negative reinforcement = something is being removed that will make the behavior more likely to happen again (example: horse starts walking towards the trailer ➜ I stop swinging the rope in his direction, as a result the horse starts walking more often towards the trailer)
Negative punishment = something is being removed that will make the behavior less likely to happen again (example: the horse is aggressive when you are feeding him ➜ you take away the food, thereby he stops being aggressive)
I know that some will disagree with me, but I have to say that I have never seen a trainer teach a horse without using all of these 4 tools. I try to see them just as such “tools” for communication. I really believe that it is beneficial to both in a relationship to use all of these tools to both be effective in the communication and be authentic as well.
I always try to be realistic by being clear and even proud to say that I train with positive and negative reinforcement as well as positive and negative punishment, even if it get’s me into trouble some times because today we live in the „positive revolution“ where the word „negative“ and „punishment“ is not only misunderstood but avoided at all costs.
Funnily enough I think that people trying to get rid of „punishment“ or „negative“ are having the opposite effect of what they are looking for. Most people think that getting rid of this will strengthen the relationship or improve the horses life. I have just never seen it happen that way.
Now I’m almost already expecting a sh*tstorm on this, so please be sure that if you comment, no matter if agreeing or disagreeing with me, you have really understood the definition mentioned above and explained in the picture.
In what way do you use positive and negative reinforcement or positive and negative punishment?
