Research at DIL #1:

Harvest Value. What if the unused half of a broccoli harvest became the product, not the waste?
That's the question research at DIL working on.

The work moves through the same stages FPPE students learn in their studies: market research narrows product concepts, lab-scale trials test taste and shelf life, and pilot-scale production checks whether an idea holds up beyond the lab. This is product innovation and engineering in practice, not theory.

Every version is also measured against its environmental footprint using life cycle assessment (LCA), the same method covered in the module “Environmental and Sustainability Management”. It's a direct look at how side-stream valorization and sustainability research actually connect inside the FPPE curriculum.

One of the most common reasons people don't apply to a master’s abroad is the assumption that they can't afford it.

So, let's talk numbers, because the FPPE is one of the more financially accessible programmes you'll find at this level.

🔹 Low tuition fee.
🔹 A semester contribution that covers your public transport.
🔹 A small town with a genuinely low cost of living compared to most German university cities.

It's not free - health insurance, accommodation, and daily life cost real money but the full picture is a lot less intimidating than the headline "studying in Germany" might suggest.

Scholarships through DAAD, Deutschlandstipendium and Stadtstiftung Quakenbrück – Bürger für ihre Stadt are also worth exploring early which require independent applications and have their own timelines.

Most food engineering degrees teach you sustainability as a chapter.

🌱 At FPPE, it's the foundation everything else is built on.

This is what Semester 1 looks like at Master Food Science.

Not theory in a lecture hall, a complete rethinking of how food systems are designed, from someone who has spent his career doing exactly that.

🎯 Food innovation – the good, the bad, the ugly!

Our students got a masterclass in food innovation the way it actually works in industry by our expert Holger York Toschka. He worked as R&D director at Unilever for about 30 years and his vision is to pass on his experiences and knowledge in food innovation to students and graduates.

Students learned about R&D workflows and product strategy, as well as market risks, and how to pitch real business ideas.

🙌 This is what the M.Sc. Food Process & Product Engineering looks like beyond the classroom.
Big thanks to DIL Deutsches Institut für Lebensmitteltechnik e. V. and Holger York Toschka for an unforgettable workshop.

🎓🔬 They came to study food.
They graduated to save its future.

Today, we celebrate the M.Sc. Food Process and Product Engineering (FPPE) Class of 2023! This isn't just a graduation; it is the launch of new innovators who are ready to bridge the gap between lab-scale research and industrial reality.

Over the last two years, this cohort has lived at the cutting edge of food science. They haven't just read about the future; they've built it.

To our new Alumni: You have learned to extract value from side streams and turn "waste" into nutrition. Whether you are heading into R&D, sustainability management, or starting your own venture, you carry the "Engineering Toolbox" needed to feed a changing world.

From the quiet streets of Quakenbrück to the research halls of TiHo Hannover, you have formed a community that spans the globe. You are no longer just students, you are the scientists of a more sustainable, high-quality, and technologically advanced food system.

🥂🌍 Cheers to the Class of 2023!
The world is hungry for what you know.
