What actually helps students stand out when they enter the world of work?

For it is not just about having the right qualification. It is about what you do with the time you have while studying.

Get your hands dirty.
Get experience through work.
Write. Think. Question.
Learn by doing, not just by listening.

In a world where everyone can access information, having knowledge is only part of the picture. What matters is being able to apply it, communicate your ideas clearly, learn from experience and keep thinking critically.

And sometimes, the simplest habits can make the biggest difference. Writing forces you to organise your thoughts. Working on real projects teaches you how things actually happen outside the classroom. Getting involved, making mistakes and figuring things out gives you experience that cannot always be taught from a textbook.

So, what skill should every student develop before graduating? What makes someone stand out in today’s job market? And what advice would you give your younger self?

We asked Brian Tomlinson for his take.

From the classroom to the heart of innovation [🤖]

Our Gisma students recently had the opportunity to experience IFA Berlin, one of the world’s leading platforms for consumer electronics and technology.

Bringing together global technology giants, established industry leaders and emerging innovators, IFA offers a unique perspective on how technology is shaping the way we live and work. From Samsung, LG, Bosch, Siemens, Panasonic, Xiaomi, TCL and Sony, students explored the latest innovations and developments across the technology landscape.

For our students, the visit was more than seeing new products. It was an opportunity to experience innovation in action, explore industry trends and gain insights into the technologies shaping tomorrow’s businesses.

At Gisma, we believe education is strengthened when students connect academic knowledge with real-world experiences. Because understanding the future starts with experiencing it first-hand.

What happens when great minds, real-world challenges and meaningful conversations come together at Gisma?

Last Friday, our new Berlin campus hosted the latest Hive Minds event, bringing together around 50 founders and marketing professionals for an afternoon of practical marketing insights, collaboration and learning.

The conversation featured Shruthi Balachandran, CEO of Hive Minds, and Brian Tomlinson, founder of Eudaic, drawing on Brian’s 20+ years of experience across marketing, communications and digital operations to explore personal branding, storytelling, authenticity and building strong company narratives.

The afternoon then moved from conversation to action, with Anugrah Vidyarthi leading the Growth Room. Participants tackled real-world marketing cases, challenged their thinking, and put ideas into practice.

Conversation → Perspective → Application.

It was great to see our campus become a space where founders, professionals and ideas came together.

Ruchi pitched an idea at Gisma. Now she is at UC Berkeley. 🚀

What starts as an idea can become an opportunity to take your vision much further.

For Ruchi Joshi, her entrepreneurial journey is taking an exciting next step. After pitching her idea as part of the selection process for the Berkeley Method of Entrepreneurship Bootcamp, Ruchi was selected to represent Gisma at UC Berkeley through its partnership with the UC Berkeley Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology.

Seven Gisma MBA students pitched their entrepreneurial ideas as part of the selection process, two students ultimately selected to take part in the bootcamp.

This marks an exciting next step in her entrepreneurial journey. From presenting her idea in front of a selection panel to joining an international community of entrepreneurs and innovators, the bootcamp will give her the opportunity to challenge her thinking, exchange perspectives and explore new possibilities.

It is a moment worth celebrating, not just for the opportunity ahead, but for the courage to put an idea forward in the first place.
