We are happy to announce our next conference:

Structures and Dynamics in Migrant Families – Transnational Processes and Global Challenges

24 to 25 April 2015 (Fri – Sat)
University of Oldenburg, Germany
Conference languages: English and German

The conference aims at scrutinizing representations of migrant families in both research and civil society. It includes the discussion of diversities of migrant families and dynamics of change, as well as individual and collective challenges, strategies and agencies.
Results of current research will be discussed with respect to their implementation, and practice-related approaches will be related to their impacts on research.

Keynotes will combine theory-, research- and practice-related perspectives. A forum for practitioners (including input presentations) and the introduction to the concept for an information handbook for migrant one-parent families offer space to discuss and link theory and praxis.

(current events:) Keynote by Nancy Fraser in Berlin, November 21 19:00 (Supermakt, Brunnenstr. 64, Berlin): From Crisis to Change?

Keynote and public debate with Nancy Fraser, Einstein Visiting Fellow and Professor of Political and Social Science at the New School for Social Research, New York

-registration required-

Having started as a housing slump in the United States, the crisis finally spread from the markets to the everyday life of people around the globe. Einstein Visiting Fellow Nancy Fraser offers an explanation for the devastating consequences of the financial crisis: In reference to the Hungarian economist Karl Polanyi (1886-1964), she makes the pe*******on of the markets into all areas of our life responsible for the extent of the crisis. What we need, in her opinion, are realms of sociality that follow their own logic – the logic of justice, for instance.

But is the theory of Polanyi still up-to-date after all? And is Nancy Fraser’s solution convincing? What are the obstacles for a balance between economy and justice? After a keynote speech, Nancy Fraser discusses these questions with scientists and prominent experts from Berlin.

How are the tensions between blacks and q***rs maintained and even magnified, which keep them from doing coalition work? Coalition alliances: what does and doesn't work from a historical and sociological perspective.

Trystan Cotten is Associate Professor of Gender Studies at California State University, Stanislaus where he teaches and conducts research on race, gender, sexuality, migration, and diaspora.
