Everyone is starting to realize that passive stretching can damage the body, but most people still don’t understand how deeply it can influence the state of our fascia and muscle tissue.
The problem with passive stretching is that it lacks the tensile components that make the human body function the way it’s designed to. When you place a joint or muscle into a stretch without movement driving it, the tissue adapts to the excessive length and strain being placed on it by gradually reducing its stretch reflex response.
Part of this happens through protective neurological mechanisms like the Golgi tendon organs. Over time, the nervous system begins allowing the body to relax deeper into ranges that it would normally resist in order to protect structural integrity.
At first, people interpret this as improvement because they can suddenly move further.
But gaining range and maintaining healthy tissue are not the same thing.
The body isn’t just supposed to lengthen. It’s supposed to lengthen, stabilize, recoil, and transfer force all at the same time.
When tissue is repeatedly stretched without active muscular engagement and force transfer, it begins losing the elastic qualities that allow us to move with power, fluidity, and stability.

Overly stretched tissue eventually becomes more brittle, dehydrated, and less resilient over time.

When flexibility is developed through efficient movement, the body builds range while simultaneously organizing the fascial system that supports that range.
