Adults cannot hold other adults accountable. We can speak how we feel. We can let someone know we’re hurt. And, we can set our boundaries.

But, we cannot require someone to explain or justify their behavior. We cannot force someone to take ownership for what they did. We cannot make someone apologize. Or do better in the future.

So many of us have a fantasy belief that if we just fully explain or “get through” to someone, we can change them. We can fix them. This is our ego over-stating our role in the behavior of another.

The truth is: the only reason people change is because they choose to change.

The only reason people apologize and become accountable for their actions is because they choose to be.

Change is an internal job.

At the end of the day, behavior is the most authentic form of communication. If someone’s behavior is hurtful, violates you, or if it doesn’t align with your boundaries— you have powerful feedback. And you get to make a choice around the role that person has in your life.

Part of the reason so many of us are exhausted is because we put so much energy into trying to change other people.

Your health and energy levels will drastically change when you focus that energy on the only person you can ever change: yourself.
