At the 30th Annual German Society for Parasitology in Gießen, the Center for Global Health was strongly represented with seven members from the group of our Co-Director, Clarissa Prazeres da Costa. She had the honour to give the opening keynote speech on “New perspectives of the schistosomiasis elimination roadmap and its implications for research and development”.
Our two postdocs then gave oral presentations: Dr. Ulrich Fabien Prodjinotho on his recently published findings on how “Helminthic glutamate dehydrogenase-dependent PGE2 production in monocyte and microglia potentiates Treg development with distinct transcriptional and epigenetic profiles”.
On the same day, our CGH coordinator Marrium H. spoke about “Sex and gender reporting in parasitology” and Youssef Hamway about his unique proof-of-concept study how “Targeting Schistosoma mansoni microRNA with small molecules modulate host-parasite interactions”.
Finally, our medical student JohannaErtl spoke about her thesis and the “Identification of a novel anti-schistosomal multi-stage component X derived from mouse serum” and our doctoral students TheresaJosten and LeonardoSternkopf presented posters on their theses about “Development of a novel rapid point-of-care PCR test for schistosomiasis” and the “Identification of parasite-associated apoptosis signaling pathways in neurocysticercosis”.
Besides great scientific interaction, we would like to thank the organizers for their great hospitality and congratulate this on this fantastic meeting which we all enjoyed.

A new European Union’s Global Health Strategy (EU GHS) was presented by the European Commission this week. It is organised around 3 priorities:
1. Better health and well-being including by regaining lost ground on universal health targets in the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), through:
• Promoting drivers of good health, addressing root causes of ill health
• Particular attention to women, girls and people in vulnerable situations
2. Advancing universal health coverage:
• More equitable primary health care systems
• Better capacity to meet health emergency needs
• Leveraging digitalisation and research
• Addressing workforce imbalances
3. Combatting health threats, including pandemics:
• New international rules and global surveillance
• Permanent platform for development and vaccine access
• One Health approach
• Control anti-microbial resistance (AMR)
The Strategy relies on new financing sources, particularly the willingness of Member States to contribute for its objectives through Team Europe, a path initially explored for funding COVID-19 response. Member States will have the chance to express their views through Council negotiations around the Strategy, potentially leading to a set of Council conclusions if they can reach a consensus.
Some critics of the Strategy have been about this lack of clarity about its financing, especially considering the EU GHS’s time horizon until 2030 while the current Multiannual Financial Framework runs only until 2027. Other critics have emphasized the little role of climate change within the Strategy.
