🎊 Last Friday, we celebrated the graduation of 150 students from 25 nations at the Munich School of Politics and Public Policy. 🎈Congratulations! We look forward to see your impact in society, industry, and education!

🏛️ HfP Rector Prof. Urs Gasser reflected on the graduates’ learning journey and the opportunities and challenges of studying in the age of generative AI. In a time when knowledge is available at our fingertips, he emphasized the need for people who think critically, build bridges, shape democratic technological transformation, and put their talents in service of society.

🌱 Keynote speaker Prof. Miranda Schreurs (Chair of Climate and Environmental Policy), highlighted the school's unique role at the intersection of technology, science, and public policy. She praised graduates' ability to think across disciplines and encouraged them to apply these skills to challenges such as climate change, plastic pollution, conflict, and democratic transformation in order to shape a more sustainable and resilient future.

🌟 In his last graduation speech before retirement, Prof. Gerhard Müller, Senior Vice President of the traced societal change from the Boomer generation to Gen Z. Democracy, he argued, is not delivered, but continually created and sustained. He expressed confidence in the graduates' ability to think critically, engage with different perspectives, and change the world through their understanding of politics and technology.

🌻 The graduates Johannes Boss and Lilli Remmers highlighted personal growth and community. Boss reminded his fellow graduates that university is not only about learning and career development, but also self-discovery. His message: pause, appreciate how far you have come, and remember: “Du bist gut genug.” Remmers celebrated the HfP spirit of critical thinking, interdisciplinary learning, and mutual support, strengths that will guide graduates on their future paths.

🌉 Our students are building bridges — literally!

In the Introduction to Politics and Technology course, students got creative 🖌️ using materials such as wood from Christmas trees 🎄, bamboo 🎍, resin 🧪, timber 🪵, and even lasagne sheets 🍝 to construct their own bridges.

🛠️ But the challenge went far beyond engineering: students explored the political 💫, environmental 🌱, social🪻, legal ⚖️, and technological 🚀 factors involved in building infrastructure projects.

✨ Thinking about innovation, Selin Arpacı, student in the master’s Program Politics & Technology 📚 at HfP, says: 💬 “Even the smallest decisions are impacted by the contextual factors, and it requires an interdisciplinary approach.” 🌈

At HfP, you combine 🏛️ with technology 🤖, data 📊, ethics ⚖️, law 📚 and more in a truly interdisciplinary environment 🌐.

You’ll gain hands-on experience and shape your own unique profile ✨. With strong ties to .muenchen () and close connections to policy and industry through our 🤝, you’ll be equipped to lead at the intersection of Politics and Technology🌍.

⏰  Apply until 31 May!

💫 Against this backdrop, at the , HfP-Professor Yannis Theocharis and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis () discussed both the nature of the problem and the range of possible policy responses.

💬 “Though misinformation is a real concern in democratic societies, empirical research consistently shows that it constitutes only a marginal share of the overall information environment,” Prof. Theocharis noted during the panel.

📊 His recent work further demonstrates that the spread of misinformation is highly concentrated among a relatively small group of extremely active users. “This has important implications for : broad, sweeping measures may not be the most effective approach,” he added.

⚖️ The discussion also addressed the widely debated question of how democratic societies can balance the of with the mitigation of . For Prof. Theocharis, whose research focuses precisely on this tension, the answer lies in precision and targetted interventions rather than overreach, particularly in a context where companies are increasingly pushing back against regulatory efforts.

🇪🇺 Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of a coordinated European approach to platform governance, highlighting the role of the as a key instrument in addressing systemic risks in the digital public sphere.

🌈 begins in the minds of people. 💭

📝 It was with this belief that the founders of the Munich School of Politics and Public Policy laid the groundwork for a School of Political Science on July 14, 1950. The founding charter put it plainly:

📜 “From scientific research and teaching—and from bitter personal experience—we know that the healthy development of a democratic state is best secured when all citizens actively participate in political life, thereby upholding the ideals of humanity, freedom, social justice and peace.” 🕊️

✨ Those ideals remain relevant today. At a time when around the world are under pressure—from ⚡️ and 🌪️ to global 💥, 🦠, and shifting dynamics 📱—the Munich School of Politics and Public Policy continues to embrace its educational mission 🎓, while also seeking innovative, solutions oriented towards the common good. 🌷

🏛️ Over the past decade, under the umbrella of the Technical University of Munich (TUM), the school has evolved significantly. 🚀 With cutting-edge study programs at the intersection of politics and technology, and its own think tank 🧠, the school today represents a modern, interdisciplinary approach to political science—one grounded in societal change. 🏫 Its research and teaching are driven by technological innovation and the pressing challenges of contemporary society.

💡 By creating a vibrant intellectual space, the school empowers young people 🌱 not only to understand democratic institutions, but to help shape them—actively and critically, with a forward-looking perspective on technological transformation. ✨🔭

🎊 To celebrate 75 years of the Munich School of Politics and Public Policy is to honor 75 years of strengthening democratic culture—through education, research, and open dialogue. 🗳️ Because democracy is never a given. It must be relearned, reimagined, and lived—especially in an age of profound technological and societal shifts. 🌍

| Digital violence is taking a toll on political engagement in Germany. The new study by researchers of the TU München and the HfP in collaboration with HateAid and funded by the Bayerisches Forschungsinstitut für Digitale Transformation - bidt highlights alarming trends and the urgent need for action.

💻💥 Over half of politically engaged individuals have experienced online harassment. The study highlights that 58% of respondents reported encountering online hate, threats, and discriminatory comments, with women being particularly affected.

📊 Key findings:

➖ are hit hardest: 63% of women reported digital violence, compared to 53% of men. Two-thirds of these women experienced gender-based violence, including s*xism and misogyny. Nearly 1 in 4 women faced threats of s*xual violence, such as r**e threats, while only 3% of men did.

➖ : One-third of the victims of digital violence also experienced physical attacks.

➖ : Over half of the victims adjusted their communication—women more so than men. 66% of women and 53% of men limited their social media usage, and 22% of women even considered quitting politics entirely due to digital violence.

⚠️ The are serious. Women, already underrepresented in politics, are further discouraged from engaging in public life, and the study underscores the need for urgent action from parties, law enforcement, and social media platforms.
