Over the past few years, I have been asked by young alumni and graduates if I had any advice to share. I remember the first time I began…. “Even though these are not the best times in terms of opportunities both globally and at home” …. Who knew that it would become so much more challenging.
I came up with the following list.
1. Integrity is the most valuable quality to retain regardless of where your career journey takes you.

2. ‘Know and respect your bread and butter’ or main source of income. Attain a minimum of 5 – 7 solid years in your chosen field whatever that may be. Work out a plan for advancement but ensure that it is in line with your personal goals and values.

3. Become financially literate and understand the bottom line for any business activity you work in or for. Learn to manage your own finances as soon as possible. From the first paycheck, learn to develop your monthly budget and savings plan. Learn to invest and understand how money and markets work

4. Become self-motivated and Proactive. Many of us have one challenge in common and that is maintaining the right work-life balance especially after starting our own family. For some of us this can best be achieved through reading books on the subject………. there are many sources on self- betterment, mastery, becoming skilled at a particular activity, understanding business, etc. Most professionals are usually willing to share what worked best for them.

5. Become multidisciplinary. Take steps early in your career to become skilled in various fields, not necessarily those directly linked to your chosen career – for example, Business Entrepreneurship, Entertainment promotion and organizing, ’being the middleman’ (some people will always need or want others to provide intermediary service for them). This is different from rent-seeking. Avoid this at all cost and ask yourself if your activity is adding value. Whatever you choose it helps immensely if it’s something you like doing!

6. Develop a side hustle. Invest in yourself. After working a few years and accumulating significant savings, begin exploring some activity that you are good at and like doing. Try to slowly monetize this activity. It may lead you into other areas that can one day turn your side hustle into your main hustle.

7. Increase and maintain a network of connections. Sounds like something from LinkedIn but having friends and connections globally in different areas of business helps to increase your circle of influence and reach. Always try to help others along the way and keep in contact with past colleagues and school mates. This one is sometimes difficult but keep at it.

8. Think globally. After 5-7 years in your chosen field, start thinking of ways of marketing and selling your skills on an international level. Develop your own personal brand. Create a website or web page and start a blog. Many people are trapped in a local state of mind and would never think about working outside their state or home country. They cannot envision living or working in a foreign country. Pick any place in the world, research it and determine if making a move there yields more pros than cons for you and your family.

9. Embrace change. Whether good or bad, always have faith and use all outcomes as a learning experience.
