📣 Antrittsvorlesung: Wir laden herzlich ein zur Antrittsvorlesung im Rahmen der Umhabilitierung von PD Dr. Felix Arnold. Morgen, 25.06., um 16:30 Uhr, spricht er zum Thema „Geschichte der ägyptischen Architektur“. Der Vortrag findet in Raum 00-309 EG der Hegelstraße 59 statt - alle Interessierten sind herzlich eingeladen!

Online Ringvorlesung: Im Rahmen des Projekts "Lebenshilfe im antiken Rom" im Arbeitsbereich Klassische Philologie des Instituts für Altertumswissenschaften der JGU Mainz findet im Sommersemester 2026 eine spannende Vortragsreihe zu "Coping with Life: Ancient Tools for Modern Problems?" statt, zu der alle Interessierten herzlich eingeladen sind. Wir freuen uns mit Laura Drusenheimer, die heute sehr erfolgreich ihre BA-Prüfung in Ägyptologie absolviert hat. Laura schrieb ihre BA-Arbeit kombiniert in Ägyptologie und Kunstgeschichte, in der sie die ägyptischen und ägyptisierenden Motive der Beuroner Schule am Beispiel der Abteikirche St. Hildegard in Rüdesheim analysierte. Wir gratulieren sehr herzlich und wünschen viel Erfolg für die Prüfung in der Kunstgeschichte!

Projektstart! 🥳
Das Team des Projekts „LEARN-AB: Learning Environment for Ancient Egyptian and Babylonian” freut sich, heute in das neue, großzügig vom Gutenberg Lehrkolleg geförderte Projekt zu starten. Am Nachmittag findet die erste Sitzung des Seminars und Praktikums statt, dass die Projektleiterinnen Dr. Monika Zöller-Engelhardt und Univ.-Prof. Dr. Doris Prechel anbieten.

Project launch! 🥳
The team of the project “LEARN-AB: Learning Environment for Ancient Egyptian and Babylonian” is delighted to kick off the new project today, generously funded by the Gutenberg Lehrkolleg. This afternoon marks the first session of the seminar and practical course offered by the project leads Dr Monika Zöller-Engelhardt and Prof. Dr Doris Prechel.

🎉 Between 6th of January and 18th of February, the Colossi of Memnon and Amenhotep III Temple Project directed now by Kathrin Gabler (Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz) and Dietrich Raue (German Archaeological Institute Cairo) continued work at the site. The team concentrated on the area of the Third Pylon where the two colossal alabaster statues of Amenhotep III were re-erected in December 2025 through the tremendous efforts of Hourig Sourouzian, Nairy Hampikian, the international team, and the authorities of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. Another major work was the study of pottery from the dewatering project and a context in front of the Third pylon. Besides, documentation, monitoring and conservation processes continued at the Second Pylon and selected areas.

🤝 We would like to thank the MoTA, the SCA and Luxor Inspectorate for their continuous support and collaboration, and congrat our rais Mohamed Ali el-Ghasab, who was honoured by H.E. Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathi on his achievements and work related to the Alabaster colossi.

Neues Projekt! LEARN-AB: Learning Environment for Ancient Egyptian and Babylonian | Digitale Lernumgebung für Altägyptisch und Babylonisch

Die Arbeitsbereiche Ägyptologie und Altorientalistik des Instituts für Altertumswissenschaften an der JGU Mainz freuen sich, im Sommersemester ein neues, vom Gutenberg Lehrkolleg gefördertes Lehr-Lernprojekt umzusetzen!
Das Projekt “LEARN-AB: Learning Environment for Ancient Egyptian and Babylonian”, geleitet von Dr. Monika Zöller-Engelhardt und Univ.-Prof. Dr. Doris Prechel, wird mit Studierenden eine forschungs- und projektorientierte digitale Lehr-Lernumgebung im LMS Moodle entwickeln – von Studierenden für Studierende.
Zum Seminar und Praktikum „Alte Sprachen und Schriften innovativ lehren“ im SoSe 2026 sind Master-Studierende der Ägyptologie, Altorientalistik, Vorderasiatischen Archäologie und Digitalen Methodik in den Geisteswissenschaften eingeladen, melden Sie sich gern per Email. Hörer*innen aller Bereiche sind bei aktiver Teilnahme ebenfalls herzlich willkommen.

LEARN-AB: Learning Environment for Ancient Egyptian and Babylonian

The departments of Egyptology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies of the Institute of Ancient Studies at JGU Mainz are pleased to launch a new teaching and learning project in the upcoming summer semester, funded by the Gutenberg Lehrkolleg.
The project “LEARN-AB: Learning Environment for Ancient Egyptian and Babylonian”, led by Dr. Monika Zöller-Engelhardt and Univ.-Prof. Dr. Doris Prechel, will develop a research- and project-based digital learning environment within the LMS Moodle – created by students for students.
For the seminar and practicum “Innovative Teaching of Ancient Languages and Scripts” (SoSe 2026), Master’s students in Egyptology, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology, and Digital Methods in the Humanities are invited to participate. Guests from all disciplines are also warmly welcome, expected is active participation. Wir begrüßen herzlich PD Dr. Felix Arnold, der nach seiner gestrigen erfolgreichen Umhabilitierung das Team der Mainzer Ägyptologie verstärken wird. Der 2. Direktor des DAI Madrid leitet seit vielen Jahren Feldforschungen in Ägypten, Spanien und Marokko. Felix Arnolds Forschungsschwerpunkte sind die historischen Bauforschung in allen Facetten, v.a. in der Ägyptologie und den Islamwissenschaften. Seine spannende Antrittsvorlesung beschäftigte sich mit den Ursprüngen der Terrassentempel in Ägypten, ein Thema, zu dem 2024 seine Publikation „The Origins of Terraced Temples in Egypt“ erschien. Wir freuen uns sehr über diese Verstärkung unseres Dozierendenteams, wo F. Arnold im Oktober die 2. JGU-DAIK-Herbstschule leiten wird.

We warmly welcome PD Dr Felix Arnold, who will be joining the Egyptology team in Mainz following his successful habilitation yesterday. The second director of the DAI Madrid has been conducting fieldwork in Egypt, Spain and Morocco for many years. Felix Arnold's research focuses on all aspects of historical building research, particularly in Egyptology and Islamic studies. His exciting inaugural lecture dealt with the origins of terraced temples in Egypt, a topic on which his publication ‘The Origins of Terraced Temples in Egypt’ appeared in 2024. We are delighted to welcome him in our teaching staff, where F. Arnold will lead the 2nd JGU-DAIK Autumn School in October.
