Roman Olshevskiy is a PhD candidate and research associate at the Department of Cultural Studies at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.
In his doctoral research on „Investigating the Manosphere as a Transnational Public Arena“, he employs transnational ethnography to examine how masculinity, self-optimization, and right-wing political imaginaries are negotiated across digital and physical spaces of the global manosphere, and how these ideas are lived and performed in the everyday lives of men in Germany.

“Socialist Modernist Worldmaking: Yugoslav Interventions in the International Humanitarian Debates in the 1970s”

This talk explores a humanitarian imaginary inspired by the political vocabularies of socialism and the Non-Aligned Movement.

In the 1970s, the Red Cross of Yugoslavia initiated a series of actions to encourage the International Red Cross Movement to reconsider its humanitarian principles and include perspectives from the countries belonging to the Non-Aligned Movement. The Yugoslav proposal provoked discussion in the International Red Cross Movement over the meaning of “humanitarianism,” “neutrality,” and “peace.” The push for the perspectives of non-aligned countries to be better represented within the International Red Cross Movement resulted in an ambivalent humanitarian imaginary that both challenged and reproduced the premises of the humanitarian sector in the West.

This largely forgotten episode in the history of humanitarianism can best be understood as an attempt at worldmaking, not of a world free from the coloniality/modernity nexus, but of a socialist modernist world that was in many aspects different from the one that had been built since the 1970s.

Prof. Dr. Brković studies how people cope with situations in which their agency is suspended; how they navigate ambiguity, uncertainty, and failure; and how power and inequality operate in the complex conditions that abound in Southeast Europe, a region undergoing multiple, simultaneous socio-political transformations. This has led her to ethnographically and historically research diverse fields such as clientelism, activism, social care, and humanitarianism. She is also interested in historically diverse projects of integrating the world differently, such as socialist humanitarianism and alternative forms of Europeanization.

Dort erfährt sie, was „Flying Tigers“ waren: US-Flugzeuge, die im 2. Weltkrieg Militärgüter von Assam über den Himalaya ins chinesische Kunming brachten. Duttas teilfiktionaler Doku-Essay führt um die halbe Welt und durch etliche Jahrzehnte und erzählt von menschlichem Erleben und gigantischer Logistik – kleine Geschichten im Schatten der großen Geschichte. Madhusree Dutta ist Filmemacherin, Autorin und Kulturproduzentin, die in Indien und Deutschland lebt.

In diesem Beitrag präsentieren wir Euch die Karrieremöglichkeiten und Arbeitsfelder für Kulturanthropolog*innen. Die Bachelor-Übung „Berufliche Perspektiven“ begleitet Studierende auf dem Weg von der perfekten Bewerbung (inklusive Lebenslauf und Motivationsschreiben) über die Aufklärung über wichtige Skills für die Berufswelt hin zu den Karrieremöglichkeiten von Kulturanthropolog*innen. Außerdem beinhaltet das Modul ein Pflichtpraktikum für Kernfachstudierende.😊

What career prospects do I have with a degree in Cultural Studies/ European Ethnology?
In this post, we present the career opportunities and fields of work available to Cultural Anthropologists. The bachelor’s course “Professional Perspectives” supports students on their journey from creating the perfect application (including CV and application letter) and identifying key professional skills to exploring the diverse career paths open to Cultural Anthropologists. The module also includes a mandatory internship for students enrolled in the major. 😊

Im Kernfachstudium des Faches besteht für Bachelorstudierende die Pflicht, ein Praktikum in einem kulturwissenschaftlichen Berufsfeld abzuschließen. Das Praktikum muss eine Dauer von 180 Arbeitsstunden (im Modul VIII der PO 2024) oder 240 Arbeitsstunden (im Modul 09 der PO 2016) umfassen und mit der Fachberatung abgestimmt werden.

Nathalie is studying Cultural Anthropology/European Ethnology at the bachelor’s level and, in this post, introduces her internship at a museum. As part of the core studies in this subject, bachelor’s students are required to complete an internship in a cultural-scientific professional field. The internship must comprise a total of 180 working hours (Module VIII of the 2024 examination regulations) or 240 working hours (Module 09 of the 2016 examination regulations) and must be coordinated with the academic advising office.
