In almost all political debates of the present - but especially those of biopolitics - it can be observed that these are characterized by dissent and conflict, instead of consensus and harmony. Agonal theories of democracy take this aspect as an opportunity to point out new ways of conflict regulation. In her now published dissertation Manon Westphal makes proposals for the design of political institutions and thus for overcoming the institutional deficit of agonal democracy.

We do not live in an ideal world. So shouldn't political theory also allow itself a pinch of realism? Our conference "Doing Realist Political Theory" has just been opened by Manon Westphal. In the next three days, participants from all over the world will discuss practical problems of a realistic political theory. More information: http://go.wwu.de/tmx51

We do not live in an ideal world. So shouldn't political theory also allow itself a pinch of realism? Not whether but how this could actually work in practice will be discussed at a conference from 4 to 6 July. Registration will close today. More information: http://go.wwu.de/tmx51

Weitere Informationen: http://go.wwu.de/tmx51

Moral demandingness in concrete terms: Do I have to risk my life or my job to help others or to do the morally right thing? What does it mean to be morally demanding? Simon Derpmann and Marcel van Ackeren have just started the workshop "Demandingness in practice". More information on the event: http://go.wwu.de/dndwu

To what extent are the significance of autonomy for Bioethics and the admissibility of paternalism also dependent on societal constraints? Our long-standing fellow Erzsébet Rózsa (Debrecen) explored this question in her book "Autonomia és Paternalizmus" using the example of Hungary's broken modernity. The book was published at the beginning of this year and has received a lot of attention, especially among Hungarian doctors, due to its practice-related investigation of the doctor-patient relationship. Professor Rózsa presents her book in today's Jour fixe which is probably the last one of the Centre.

The question of when moral norms are too demanding has so far primarily been discussed from a metaethical point of view. But how does it look in practice: Do I have to risk my life or my job to help others or to do the morally right thing? A workshop on 27–29 June will focus on demandingness objections in practical ethics. More Information: http://go.wwu.de/dndwu

Weitere Informationen: http://go.wwu.de/dndwu

"There's nothing good except: One does it." Ascriptivists would probably supplement this saying by: "One does nothing good, unless it is recognized". A workshop on June 21-22 will explore how Ascriptivism turns the current practice of the constitution of actions and the attribution of responsibility upside down. More Information (in German): http://go.wwu.de/0qd2z
