The final walk-around. The last check before you fly.

Fuel caps, tie-downs, everything set. On two-bladed helicopters, we leave the blades at 30 degrees — an easy way to make sure they've been untied before start-up.

Autorotations can feel overwhelming when you're starting out.

In flight school you usually practice the standard one, with the runway right in front of you. But the engine won't always quit under those perfect conditions. Knowing how to pick your landing spot and keep your RPM in the green is what really matters.

We break the autorotation down into its 4 phases: entry, glide, flare, and touchdown.

In an autorotation, RPM control is everything. And the key is to control your RPM, not chase it.

Why do we instructors prefer to keep the RPM on the lower side, below 100%, instead of the upper side?
