Math Planck People - They make Math happen! 📸
Ciao! My name is Andrea Rosana and I have been a postdoc in the Nonlinear Algebra group since October 2025. Before moving to Leipzig, I was a PhD student at the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste, Italy. Originally, I am from Firenze.
My main research interest is metric algebraic geometry: I look at (real) algebraic varieties through the lenses of differential topology and geometry, trying to understand their metric properties. I like to apply these insights to all sorts of problems, from optimization questions involving distance functions in nonlinear settings to exploring the properties of random real tensors. In reality (pun not intended), I spend a lot of time doing computations on the Grassmannian. Here at MPI, I am learning new techniques coming from an algebraic perspective and building on my computational skills.
When I'm not doing maths (and also occasionally when I'm doing it), I like to be outside and stay active. I play tennis, table tennis, volleyball, ski, and am eager to talk about the latest competition at any given time. I am very easy to bribe: any kind of chocolate or pictures of red pandas will do the job!

We are delighted to share that our director Anna Wienhard is part of the newly launched Simons Collaboration on Discrete Subgroups of Lie Groups.
The initiative brings together researchers in geometry, representation theory, and probability to advance our understanding of discrete subgroups of Lie groups and their rich mathematical structures.
We are also excited to host the first Summer School of the Simons Collaboration at our institute in May 2027.
Wishing the collaboration every success! ⭐
New Simons Collaboration Will Explore Discrete Subgroups of Lie Groups
Mathematician Yair Minsky will direct a Simons Foundation collaboration studying the mathematical structures, which are invaluable to modern physics.

Hi, my name is Marie Trin, I am currently a postdoc in Anna Wienhard's group. Prior to this I was a PhD student in Rennes in the group of Ergodic theory where my advisor was Juan Souto.
My research is at the interplay between hyperbolic geometry, ergodic theory and geometric group theory. The core of my work is about curves on surfaces and objects that generalize this notion such as measured laminations and geodesic currents. I am interested in the action of the mapping class group and its subgroups on these objects and use ergodic theory tools to study the orbits of these actions. I am also interested in some group theoretic notions arising from the study of the mapping class group. More generally, I am always happy to discuss any math topic that can be drawn.
I like art and I really think that artists and mathematicians have a lot to learn from each-others. I collaborated during my PhD with a graphic designer who created initials for the chapters of my manuscript inspired from the mathematical objects I study.
When I am not at the MPI I spend a lot of time doing different art activities, but also enjoying the nature or exploring nearby cities. Since I have been in Leipzig I also try to learn German with our amazing German teacher Mirke.
