The bones of the human skeleton can be classified by their shape into five types:

🔹 Long bones are usually tubular in shape and have two ends articulating with other bones.

🔹 Short bones are commonly cuboidal in shape and usually as long as they are wide.

🔹 Flat bones are flat and thin bones and have fibrocartilage covering their articular surfaces. They function to protect internal organs.

🔹 Irregular bones have a variable and irregular shape, which aids in protecting internal structures.

🔹 Sesamoid bones are small and oval in shape. Sesamoid bones are found at the end of long bones and are embedded within tendons.They help in manipulating the angle of the osteotendinous insertion, redistributing mechanical forces throughout the muscle or tendon.

🎵 “You are the light of my eyes…”

Here’s a fascinating reason that lyric is more scientifically accurate than you might think: your visual system is sensitive enough to detect a single photon, the smallest unit of light.

Your retina contains millions of rod cells that help you see in low-light conditions. Individual rods can respond to a single photon, but that does not mean you consciously see every tiny signal they detect.

Your visual system first combines and filters those signals. This prevents random biological noise from appearing as constant flashes of light.

In other words:

👁️ Your eye detects the signal.
🧠 Your brain decides whether it is real.

Detection and perception are two different steps, and they reveal just how extraordinary the human visual system is.

Why do cold temperatures, fear, or even an emotional song give us goosebumps?

The answer lies in the arrector pili muscle, a tiny muscle attached to the base of each hair follicle. When cold or strong emotion activates the sympathetic nervous system, this muscle contracts. The hair stands upright, the surrounding skin rises, and a goosebump forms.

This reflex was more useful to our hairier ancestors. Raised hairs could trap warm air close to the skin and make the body appear larger when facing a threat. Humans have much less body hair today, so the reflex no longer provides the same benefits, but it remains part of our physiology.

Ever pushed your lower jaw forward for a bulldog impression? 🐶 That move is powered by two muscles hidden deep in your cheek: the pterygoids.

The medial pterygoid elevates your mandible (closing your mouth), while the lateral pterygoid is the specialist in protrusion — sliding your jaw forward at the temporomandibular joint. Together they're essential for chewing, speaking, and every jaw movement in between.

Ever wondered what actually happens in your brain when you form a memory?

It comes down to long-term potentiation (LTP). In the hippocampus, glutamate activates AMPA and NMDA receptors on the receiving neuron. Once the cell depolarises, a magnesium "plug" is knocked out of the NMDA receptor, calcium rushes in, and the connection between the two neurons is strengthened for the long haul. That's learning — happening at a single synapse.
