The bones of the human skeleton can be classified by their shape into five types:
🔹 Long bones are usually tubular in shape and have two ends articulating with other bones.
🔹 Short bones are commonly cuboidal in shape and usually as long as they are wide.
🔹 Flat bones are flat and thin bones and have fibrocartilage covering their articular surfaces. They function to protect internal organs.
🔹 Irregular bones have a variable and irregular shape, which aids in protecting internal structures.
🔹 Sesamoid bones are small and oval in shape. Sesamoid bones are found at the end of long bones and are embedded within tendons.They help in manipulating the angle of the osteotendinous insertion, redistributing mechanical forces throughout the muscle or tendon.

Why do cold temperatures, fear, or even an emotional song give us goosebumps?
The answer lies in the arrector pili muscle, a tiny muscle attached to the base of each hair follicle. When cold or strong emotion activates the sympathetic nervous system, this muscle contracts. The hair stands upright, the surrounding skin rises, and a goosebump forms.
This reflex was more useful to our hairier ancestors. Raised hairs could trap warm air close to the skin and make the body appear larger when facing a threat. Humans have much less body hair today, so the reflex no longer provides the same benefits, but it remains part of our physiology.
