Jay Newton-Small's father, Graham, had dementia and had to go into a care home. There were a hundred things Jay wanted to tell her dad's carers, but there didn’t seem to be a way to do that.

“He was treated as a checklist and a group of clinical problems and I wanted people to know that he was this extraordinary human who had incredible stories,” Jay tells us.

Jay is a writer, so she wrote a one-page summary of her dad’s life, outlining his childhood in Australia and his international career – and then she stuck copies of the story all over the care home.

As well as Graham’s carers, the families of other patients read it too, and asked Jay to do the same for their loved ones. This small initiative grew into a company, Memorywell, that’s created more than 1,000 patient biographies across the US.

Of all the gates in all the world, THIS has to be one of the best, surely?! Not only is it positioned perfectly in an old stone wall, it leads to the most wonderful view of the Hope Valley, and if you look closely, it even has ‘Hathersage’ written on it! - Suzanne
