NEOShield-2

Project coordinated by Airbus Defence and Space along with 10 European Partners to protect the Earth from hazardous NEO's.

NEOShield-2 is a collaborative R&D project as part of the EU's Horizon 2020 programme. NEOs are Near Earth Objects, and we will be investigating how to defend against an asteroid that may impact the Earth. Yes, we are preparing to protect the planet! There are two main parts to the study:

The first part of the study is to develop several technologies necessary to implement space missions that cou

ld divert an asteroid from its path, thus preventing it from colliding with us. There are several possibilities for doing this. One is to hit the asteroid head on with something heavy (a spacecraft) and causing it to change its path slightly. Another is to explode something next to it, and another is to fly a spacecraft called a gravity tractor next to the asteroid for a long time, causing the spacecraft's own (very small) gravity to slowly pull the asteroid onto a different path. We will also propose a demonstration mission to test the technologies required. The second part is to increase the scientific state-of-the-art of the asteroids themselves. This will include more studies of the material properties of the asteroids, their orbits, types, etc. The consortium is made up of 11 organisations from Germany, France, Spain, Italy, England and Northern Ireland.
