INTERNATIONAL SUMMER ACADEMY IS OVER!

In an interview with Sanna Svedestedt I once said:
"Imagination can help to go through processes, discussions, happenings and trough complete events, but they always stay as imaginations, if you don´t start to realize them. At that time I didn´t know who would be part of the International Summer Academy community - who would teach, and who would learn.

Since three days it´s over. 13 days of wonderful experiences, new connections between people, all sorts of shared emotions, exciting gatherings, new knowledge and skills have created an amazing first edition of the International Summer Academy at Campus Idar-Oberstein.

I want to THANK my professors: Theo Smeets, Ute Eitzenhöfer and Eva Kollischan, who supported me with using the facilities of the Campus and their trust, that everything will work out as I imagined it.

I want to THANK my lovely teachers: Danni Schwaag, Daniela Malev, Märta Mattsson, Susanne Matsché, Alexander Friedrich, Rudy Faulkner and Manu Ocaña, who created a perfect working atmosphere for the participants, who work much longer during the evenings and nights, just to get the best results for each of their students. I am really really proud of you! Fantastic work! And if I have my own school one day;) for sure YOU get a job;)

Today the final workshop ended with photography class. Participants from Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Argentina, Columbia and Italy took part:) Thank you Manu for all the extra hours! You are a great teacher!!!

I was lucky to be introduced to the filigree technique in Russia by a real master of the trade, Konstantin Grebenkov in Moscow. I am grateful and want to share this knowledge with others to be carried on...
Filigree is such an old and amazing technique, it was or still is used almost all around the world (from Europe, the Orient, Africa, India, China, Latin America,...).
Although contemporary jewelers tend to frown upon a lot of these traditional pieces, the technique and the elaborate jewels themselves are worth taking a closer look. They can be an amazing source of inspiration for many of us!
Filigree is unusual in many ways: the solder that is used is powdered onto the piece and flows without leaving a trace. The pieces are constructed from very thin and delicate wire to become amazingly steardy, stable and light (in weight) jewelry.
So Filigree is a nice exercise to go from one dimension (wire) to the second (the first layer) to the third dimension (many layers/assembling the layers to become a body)!
In the numerous workshops I have been teaching in the USA and Europe I have seen how amazed and inspired the participants were and how they took the information they got further and created their own special pieces. For every workshop I also bring my own pieces and a pile of literature about Filigree jewelry all around the world.
